The thing with the purple flowers is spotted dead nettle (which has a variety of other names; "scientifically" Lamium maculatum). Can be invasive but it's a useful plant to grow in shady areas. Bees tend to like it.

I think your back yard looks pretty awesome, though I would also want to chop it down for a vegetable garden. :)
