polyfrog, I'm looking at you

My converse are falling apart, so I just ordered a pair of sneakers from No Sweat Apparel.

(For those who don't know, Converse was bought by Nike last year.)

They're a bit pricey with the exchange rate, and so far they only have black low-tops and pink or red high-tops as colour options. But they say they'll expand the product line if the ones they have are successful.

Somehow I managed to plan ahead, and bought a couple pairs of chucks in my size back in '98. I have them packed away, unworn, for when the current ones give out. I hope No Sweat is still around when my stash is gone, because there's no way I'm buying any from the current "Converse."

Do you think they'll be better made than the Converse? I'm not overly bothered by conspicuous 'political correctness' on my clothing, but IMO Nike rip off both their workers /and/ their customers with drastic reductions in quality - and in the UK Converse are not cheap anyway, about £30 - the same price as these shipped, almost. Give me a choice of an ethical product with no 'brand' or a branded product at the same price, and I'll go with the former, especially if the latter is not the same quality that it used to be.

If Nike want my money and to use sweatshops, they better be selling their product cheap, because there are hundreds of small firms (often the same factories) selling the sweatshop-made shoes without the Nike brand for considerably less.

So, when my red Converse high-tops wear out - or actually, before - I'm going to order some of the red high-tops.

I'll let you know what I think of them when they arrive. Some of the sizes are on back-order, but it looked like they still had some in stock in my size.

Oooh, would you mind letting me know if they're comfy? I'd like some, but have had bad luck with shoes lately.

Thanks.:)
