we can make an earthquake

House update: We finally finally got the Jesus-wept friggin' land survey. They told me it would take two months, so every Monday after the start of December I would call the office and ask for an update and would be told "by the end of the week". We did this dance for seven weeks in a fuck. ing. row.

Then finally, finally, finally I got it and fired it over to the contractor. The very next day two of his minions showed up and ripped out all the walls, ceiling and tile. Cupboards, fixtures, everything are in a pile of bin bags outside our back door. They took a bunch of photos and the contractor is now working on the drawings for us to have a look at.

The also covered every single thing we own in a layer of plaster dust in the process - including all our food and dishes. So dealing with that was fun.

(I may have been over tired after the fifth load of plaster dust and um, accidentally tipped a spoon down the toilet along with the discarded wash water. The less said about that, the better.)

Anyway. The fact that there are no walls in the kitchen means that you can now see the gaping holes where the wood has rotted clean away. The Axe stapled sheets of plastic over the doorway and we have a blanket hanging over the opening but it's still pretty draughty.

Other than that, I think we did a pretty good job of preparing to not have a kitchen for however many months. The freezer is stuffed full of food. We have a set of shelves set up in our living room with a toaster oven and a microwave. Every night I haul the dirty dishes upstairs in a milk crate, wash them, and haul them back down in the morning.

The cats hate it.

At some point we need to go over to the storage unit and repack everything - everything is piled kind of haphazardly as we packed it up and it's pretty full. Once the real construction starts they'll be digging out the basement so we'll need to move what's left of Axe's apartment.

We started this process in April, holy shit. But at least things are finally moving.

I find this kind of inspiring, like, you finally have uncovered a big problem so you're well on your way to fixing it properly! I want to uncover the rot in my own life!

Oh, wow. Good luck and much strength to get through the rest of the reno!

Can you also put up some of that heat-shrink plastic window sheeting to help seal the opening a bit more tightly?

I think you would be justified in using disposable plates and cutlery during this disruption.
