barrel fish and the shooting thereof

Is is lame to be proud of yourself for coming up with the world's simplest solution to a problem just because you know nobody else in your department would have thought of it?

That's very often the only way anything gets done, IME. Might as well be pleased with yourself, else you strangle.

A fish in a barrel still tastes great in a light lemon dill sauce. :)

Nope. It's the only time anybody thinks I'm smart any more.

No, because if you hadn't thought of it, all of your stupid work colleagues would still be wasting valuable hours and brain trying to think of it. So what if it's simple?

Also, I always used to think of the most elaborate ways around problems, and overlook the obvious. I'm better than I used to be, but it's still useful for me to be paired up with more direct thinkers who can say "Why don't we simply do this?".

Simplicity is extremely difficult to do well. It is much harder to come up with a simple solution than a complicated one.
