do a new thing every day

I just had my very first ever experience with a Neti Pot.

Weirdest. Sensation. Ever.

CAN YOU DIG IT?

[identity profile] victorianrose23.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Quite the experience, isn't it? I had to use one multiple times a day after I had sinus surgery. It was a bit of a spine tingling experience. Esp as the healing got more intense. LOL

[identity profile] the-siobhan.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think the resulting oxygen rush from OH MY GOD I CAN BREATHE probably contributed.

[identity profile] victorianrose23.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
OMG I so understand. When I woke up after my surgery and realized I could breathe clearly through both nostrils at the same time for the first time, I thought I was going to pass out. Of course, going through that first dry winter with completely open sinuses was sooo painful. heh I hope this keeps working for you. Reminds me, I need to be better about flushing my sinuses more often so they don't get blocked again.

It gave me a head ache and then cause hearing loss in my left ear that gradually went away over three days. Apparently I did it too fast.

[identity profile] the-siobhan.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like you are getting water into the Eustachian tubes.

Definitely go slower. Although some people naturally have larger Eustachian tubes and so can't use it at all.

[identity profile] neoliminal.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always had nasal problems so maybe this is the case.

[identity profile] the-siobhan.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
The actual pot rather than the squeeze-bottle is less likely to cause problems in that regard, because it's solely dependent on gravity. It's harder to accidentally force water some place it shouldn't go.

If you do give it another go, also make sure to be very gentle if you are blowing your nose afterwards.

Slightly confused there as netty is Northern English slang for the toilet.

Also, that explains the odd thing my housemate kept in the bathroom that I always thought was use in a different orrifice!

The imagination boggles!

i am considering getting a neti pot, as well. Weird, but good, yes? Nor no?

[identity profile] the-siobhan.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's my first try, but based on first use I'm thinking it's going to be a very good thing indeed.

It felt very strange to have warm water coursing around INSIDE MY FACE but not particularly unpleasant.

[identity profile] ash-pixie.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I love my neti for things like sinus infections, allergy attacks and sometimes it even helps with migraine relief. Oddest thing I have happen with it is that when using it on one side, I get the water coming out my eye a little :D Apparently I tilt my head a little much that way.

Uncle Wikipedia reports that neti doodads may be good for cleaning your tear ducts.

Sometimes when it's very cold and I blow my nose, my eyes bubble.

Mine crackle.

Very disturbing.

I get the eye watering deal too. The creepiest thing that ever happened to me was neti-ing and noticing that something scary and black came out of my eye. So, I suppose I second the blow comment that says the thing is good for cleaning out tear ducts. Creepy, creepy. I still don't know what the gunk even was.

Could have been soot? Do you live in an area with a lot of pollution?

I get conjunctivitis all the time, so this wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Really freaking disturbing mind you, but not bad.

[identity profile] candlelight1228.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded. My acupuncturists recommended one months ago. I use it occasionally when my sinuses act up. Weird stuff. I felt like I was getting water up my nose and remembered a time when I almost drowned in the ocean and had the same feeling.

[identity profile] epi-lj.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
How are the results thus far? I've been considering it.

[identity profile] the-siobhan.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well big pressure changes, such as the ones that accompany thunderstorms, usually leave me whimpering in pain and popping as many pills as I can reach without actually opening my eyes.

Today I felt absolutely fine.

So long-term results remain to be seen, but I'd say so far, so good.

[identity profile] epi-lj.livejournal.com 2008-06-10 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I've been considering it for a long time, and doing some research after seeing all of this tonight, I found this video (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/nasal-lavage/MM00552), which explained a way to do it using a bulb syringe, which I already have. So I did that. And yeah, it's kind of weird, but my sinuses feel... improved. I must have more blockage than you had in that I didn't get any intra-nostril crossover and my left nostril still feels blocked, but my right sinus feels quite improved.

I was unable to (not) follow all of the aftercare recommended don'ts, though, so hopefully I haven't done anything harmful. (For example, they say never to close a nostril to blow the remaining stuff out of the other nostril, but I seriously couldn't avoid eventually doing so -- my left nostril was driving me nuts.)

[identity profile] the-siobhan.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
The big concern appears to be driving the now-dirty water into the Eustachian tubes. If you can get the liquid out without driving any of it into your inner ear, you're all good.

I've discovered that little bits of water seems to hide inside my head and a sudden change of position can make it abruptly flow out again. (As I discovered as I bent over to kiss [livejournal.com profile] the_axel last night.)

[identity profile] excess-and-oohs.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)

if you get the temperature right, it works really well. it took me a few tries without feeling like i was drowning.

[identity profile] ravensee.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I get sinusitis everytime I get a cold. This looks very interesting.

[identity profile] eveofdstruction.livejournal.com 2008-06-09 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'e been doing it most days for a year and a half now. I haven't had a single sinus infection in that time, and I averaged 3 a year my entire life.

[identity profile] the-siobhan.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Axel says it's reduced my snoring. Which has inspired him to try it.

Of course I waited until he was mid-rinse before I announced, "This was all an elabourate joke. Hold on while I get the camera."

[identity profile] eveofdstruction.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
That was SO not keyboard safe. :D
