If I'm out hunting come right on in
September
8 – Star Trek Day: Star Trek speaks of a hope-filled future where our nationality no longer matters, and yet each of our personal heritages is still something we can be proud of. We are all citizens of the same quadrant of the galaxy, and at the end of the day that’s all that matters. Are you a Trekkie/Trekker? If you are at least somewhat "into" Star Trek, which series have you watched at least some of? Do you have thoughts on the JJ Abrams reboot films?
9 – International Sudoku Day: Do you sudoku, or are you more of a crosswords puzzle person?
10 – Arts in Education Week: Every year beginning the second Sunday in September, National Arts in Education Week celebrates the transformative powers of creative skills. Sadly, governments everywhere are cutting arts programs in schools, citing budget concerns, or to favour more "career-oriented" programs. Did you take any type of art courses in school (art, music, dance, etc.)? What benefits are there to arts education?
11 – No News is Good News Day: From where to you get most of your news? Do you find the daily onslaught of usually pretty bad news overwhelming? Do you take, or have you taken, breaks from news – essentially avoiding all news as much as possible?
12 – Day of Encouragement: Are you the type of person who naturally tries to encourage others when they need it? Does anyone in your life do the same for you?
13 – Defy Superstition Day: From throwing salt over your shoulder if you spill some, avoiding stepping on cracks in the pavement, to worrying about black cats, the world is full of superstitions. Even if your rational mind knows these strange dictates have no influence on your life, are there any superstitions you do find yourself observing? Have you ever done something considered a superstition that actually happened, e.g. you broke a mirror and then had seven incredibly unlucky years?
14 – Live Creative Day: Live Creative Day encourages us to let the world see our creativity all day long. How can you bring more creativity into your daily tasks, either at work, or at home?
15 – International Day of Democracy: How would you rate the health of your country's democracy and democratic institutions (assuming you live in one!)? What could be done to strengthen your country's democratic institutions?
16 – Locate an Old Friend Day: Do you have an old friend with whom you've lost touch? Have you tried to find them via social media (e.g. Facebook, LinkdIn, etc.,) or asking other mutual friends about them?
17 – Indoor Plant Week: This week marks the start of National Indoor Plant Week. Do you have indoor plants or do you prefer to do outdoor gardening? Do you have a green thumb, or do you seek out plants that are difficult to kill?
18 – Read an Ebook Day: Are you partial to ebooks? What are some advantages of ebooks over other formats? What sort of ereader do you use -- kindle, kobo, tablet, other? Are there some types of books that really don't work as ebooks?
19 – Talk Like a Pirate Day: Do you have a favourite book, film, or TV show about pirates?
20 –Fried Rice Day AND Pepperoni Pizza Day: September 20 is both Fried Rice Day and Pepperoni Pizza Day. Which do you prefer? Do you make your own fried rice and/or pizza, or is it take-out only?
21 – World Gratitude Day: For what (or who) are you grateful?
22 – World Car-Free Day: Would it be possible for you to go entirely car-free today?
23 – Redhead Appreciation Day: Why are redheads frequently made fun of or maligned (e.g. some cultures have believed that women who have red hair are witches, there's a "Kick A Ginger Day")? Do you like red hair? Do you know anyone with red hair?
24 – World Rivers Day: Do you live, or have you ever lived, near a river? Are the rivers in your area under threat from climate change?
25 – Better Breakfast Day: What does your breakfast usually consist of, and in what ways do you think you could make it a better breakfast?
26 – Piano Month: September is Piano Month. Did you ever take piano lessons as a kid (or even as an adult)? If yes, do you still play? If not, do wish you had? Did you learn any other instrument?
27 – World Tourism Day: When you visit a new place, do you hit all the main tourist attractions or do you prefer to travel off the beaten path? Do you live in a place that has any famous tourist attractions?
28 – Good Neighbo(u)r Day: Are you a good neighbour? Do you even know your neighbours? Have you ever had any really bad experiences with a neighbour?
29 – Ask A Stupid Question Day: There's no such thing as a stupid question except for the one you choose not to ask. When you were in school, did you hesitate to ask questions because you were afraid they were stupid questions? Did you make fun of other students who asked questions that struck you as stupid? As an adult, do you still hesitate to ask questions you think are stupid? Do you find yourself secretly hoping someone else will ask the question so you won't have to?
30 – International Podcast Day: Are you a podcast fan? What are some of your favourites? How do you find out about new podcasts that might interest you?
8 – Deep Space Nine is my favourite of the older shows. I like Discover & Strange New Worlds but haven't had time to watch all of them. Have not yet seen Lower Deck or Prodigy. I watched the first Abrams film and found it meh, I tried to watch another one and didn't even make it a third of the way through, it was so boring.
9 – I have no idea how to even play Sudoku
10 – I took some painting and drawing classes in school. I actually loved art but didn't pursue it because I didn't think I could make a living at it.
11 – Honestly these days I take my news in very small doses because otherwise I would be immobilized by despair. What little I do read is usually Al Jazeera and CBC
12 – I receive, and I try to give.
13 – I dunno, but I'm seriously considering an exorcism on this fucking house.
14 – My Write Every Day fell off a cliff when things got really busy and so did the art. I'm hoping once the renos are done I will have one less thing on my list of shit to Be Organized about and that will give me some mental space again. Creativity when I'm trying to remember to-do lists is Really Fucking Hard.
15 – Shit. Give it back to the natives, they couldn't do worse with it.
16 – I legit had somebody from high school track me down on the Facething after thirty years and a name change. He was one of the few people there I didn't hate.
17 – I love my window full of plants and yes I kill them sometimes. Other times I get lucky.
18 – I have a kindle that I think the battery might be starting to fail on. I like them just for the sheer number of books they can contain but I still read plenty of physical books.
19 – I haven't seen most of the current pirate shows. I did like the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
20 – Not actually fond of fried rice, but I do like pizza.
21 – That I'm still standing.
22 – Yep. I do occasionally rent an autoshare for hauling boxes but that's pretty much the only reason I need to use a car.
23 – I'm Irish?
24 – Apparently I live right on top of one, so there's that. My whole neighbourhood is full of underground rivers that have been contained in pipes and paved over. Occasionally they rise again.
25 – Banana, yogurt, granola. I could throw some whiskey in there I guess.
26 – I did not! I took guitar lessons for a few months and then found out I was expected to perform in front of a bunch of parents and went ha ha nope! I'm out.
27 – I like to do both to be honest. We have the CN tower so that counts.
28 – I have great neighbours given how patient they have been with the piles of crap all over my front lawn for the last year. I know my neighbours by name in the six houses directly around me, and well enough to say hello to for about half of the rest of the street.
29 – I got mocked or punished for not knowing things, so yeah I'm a bit twitchy there. I've had to learn how to ask questions at work.
30 – I don't listen to a ton. I listened to the podcast David Tennant put together during the lockdown, and the housemate listens to Well There's Your Problem on the regular but that's about it.
September finished!
***
Gentleman cat is obviously feeling better. He is, however, milking it for all he's worth. He has housemate convinced that he must be hand-fed at every meal or he shall waste away from hunger.
***
I visited the Old Man last Friday and it just so happened to be the day they were holding their vaccine clinic in the residence - they had arranged for a pharmacist to come in and give everybody both their flu and Covid shots. I took him into the room and while I was sitting with him after, it occurred to me to ask, "Can I have one too?"
"If you fill out the forms, I'll give you a shot." Perfect! So both are now sorted, easy and convenient. One in each arm so I was sore on both shoulders for a couple of days but that was it. I lucked out and got the Pfeizer, the Moderna always kicks my ass.
***
I took Monday and Tuesday off work and just - dug through my to-do pile. Mostly making a kajillion phone calls to banks and doctor's offices and making sure all the bills are paid. I now have spreadsheets for renovation bills, Old Man bills, monthly household bills, AND one for trying to put together a post-housemate-moving-out budget because spreadsheets is how I feel like I have some kind of grasp over what's going on and therefore manage to fend off just succumbing to full-blown panic.
Ahem.
I'm getting really close to the deadline where the house has to be fucking finished. It's making me more than a little bit frantic.
Breathe. Trying to remember to breathe.

Did they recommend that? Last shots I got both the the same arm.
spreadsheets is how I feel like I have some kind of grasp over what's going on
I can relate to that. I can't spreadsheet well, but well enough I can tweak some numbers and with the magic of formulas see how screwed I am financially!
The third NuTrek film (the Simon Pegg one) isn't that terrible compared to earlier ones.
Into Darkness was just drek.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-29 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)No idea. Could be just a pharmacist preference.
Most of her clients were getting a super potent version of the flu vaccine, so maybe it means their arm won't be completely inflamed the next day.

Oddly, I'd never heard about the super vax until last night(?), but of course it was some random person warning about vax injury, so I glossed over it.

BTW I came across the kink, it was an ABC US story about how stroke risk is NOT elevated by getting the supervax and covid at the same time.
