Last night's movie was Star Trek: Insurrection. It felt exactly like a TV episode. Perfectly fine movie, just nothing special about it.

I will say one thing, I always get jarred abruptly out of my suspension of disbelief when a plot point contains something objectively stupid. At one point a member of the crew said something about one of the children on the planet being de-aged by the magic radiation and one of the adults said the radiation wouldn't affect them until they reached adulthood. I yelled at the TV "Radiation doesn't work like that!"

Just an alibi sentence last night after I got home.

Charity walk went a bit sideways last night - I was supposed to be walking with my BIL and nephew and they both said fuck it early on and nipped off to the pub. We were supposed to be walking a big circle but when I got to the turn-back point I thought, well that's kind of boring to do on my lonesome so I just.. kept walking. My 5K turned into a 9K and I made it home in about 2 hours.

And it turned out to be a really nice night for a walk. It was cold crossing the ravine because of the wind (And also NOT PLOWED, for fuck sake Toronto), but the rest of the trip was entirely comfortable.

Passed a used bookstore and spotted this in the window.



Definitely the kind of place where walking through the door would launch one into an adventure featuring trolls and talking animals.

Got home, made myself a hot chocolate with whipped cream and a shot of rum in it and wrote 200+ words.

Last night's Trek movie was First Contact. This is one of the few I've seen before and honestly I didn't remember much about it - not because I thought it was a bad movie, because it was actually fine. But because I was so outraged at the whole Borg Queen plot line. Here you have the guiding intelligence of a species that is so powerful it has conquered untold civilizations and the thing it most wants is... a boyfriend. Are. You. Kidding. Me.

(And yes, I have seen the argument that she is comparable to the queen bee in a hive, and I don't buy it for one second. The queen bee is not the boss, she has a job. And if she doesn't do her job the hive will just murder her and grow a new one.)

It has stopped snowing, praise be to Zod. Think we're supposed to get more over the course of the week, but just "flurries".

The pile of snow on my front yard is over 5 feet tall. I know this because I am 5'10" and it's over the level of my eyes. I'm not sure what happens next in this circumstance - it's not like I can call the junk removers and have them cart it away. (Or could I?)

I can still reach to throw more snow on the top, but since it's now a pyramid anything added to the top just rolls right back down the sides. Maybe I'll go out there with a spray bottle and see if I can build some ice walls to contain it. That might work.

Rare plug for a book, I am currently reading Query and it is hilarious. It's entirely just a series of query letters to agents, but since nobody appears to be reading them anyway the protagonist starts drifting into using them almost as diary entries and they just keep getting more and more unhinged. It's awesome and I am loving it.

Sat up with a glass (or 3) of wine last night and noodled about with a scene where Things Are Explained. I'm not good at scenes where people are just talking so I probably deleted as many words as I wrote but I ended up about 300+ ahead.

I was listening to a shoegaze event all day, which turns out to be both good background music for doing chores and also for writing. You know, I don't think I have an actual definition in my head for what constitutes "shoegaze" but since music I want to actively listen to tends to be much crunichier it makes for good aural wallpaper while I focus on other things.

I am behind on everything today - yesterday was in-office day which always throws my schedule out of whack, and then the gf came over for movie night. I did manage to get an alibi sentence down before bed.

Last night's movie was Star Trek: Generations which was resoundingly OK. I find that the - I don't know what to call it, atmosphere? Cadence? of the Next Gen shows were very different than that of the original series. Combining them felt very weird.
