Friend of mine is going through a similar situation as yours when you started your renos. Just a few improvements to help with overall use and saleability, and now the house is gutted on the inside, right down to removing the actual second floor in parts and redoing everything; plumbing, wiring, heating... because nothing was up to code. They're at a point were they're just holding their breath hoping that X thing lasts the winter because they can't afford to touch it.
You're not alone in this. You have my friend's sympathy.
