The streets in Florence are no wider than the ones in Rome, but the buildings are only 3-4 stories tall, so they seem to be a lot brighter. And very much unlike Naples, they are spotless and in good repair. There are also a lot fewer cars here. The people who do drive do so in a way that does not make you feel like you are about to die horribly in a foreign country. And there are tons of bicycles on the streets.

The buildings are gorgeous, and obviously carefully maintained. Everything is just beautiful here. The streets are labyrinths, only instead of minotaurs they hide open plazas full of statuary and surrounded by churches and museums.

Tomorrow we go to Venice.

One warning on Venice.

It stinks. Literally, prepare your nose for what will strike you as the most ungodly stench you've ever encountered. I'm sure the Venetians are used to it by now, but Canadian noses aren't.

That may very well be true when it's warm here, but in February it smells fine.
