a merchant of some town in the north

Venice is unlike anything I have ever seen before.
It's[1] kinda grubby. The water is kind of dank and there is stuff floating in it. The buildings are not in good repair. It doesn't help at all that it's been raining since we got here.
But the canals are mind-blowing. I mean, I knew they *had* canals, that's what we came here to see after all. But I just assumed it was like a regular city with streets and more rivers than usual. Instead the canals *are*[2] the streets. They have a regular bus routes that travel on the water and people board them from floating docks on the side of the walkways. We saw an open air market where the fruit was stacked on a boat, and the owner passed the produce up to the sidewalk. The intersections all have bridges so that people can cross from the sidewalks. Houses have a "garage" where they keep their boat.
Tomorrow is the first day of Carnivale, and every shop in town is selling masks. This should be interesting.
[1] As you can see I've discovered where they keep the apostraphe on the Italian keyboard.
[2] Angle brackets, however, still elude me.
