Six songs that mean something to me
May. 29th, 2005 11:45 pmI got pegged for this one by
lee_chaos
1. The Demics: 400 Blows
The band who got me listening to punk.
One of my partners once asked me if I had a theme song, and I named this one without a second of thought. It has always spoken to me of losing, and of coming out the other side.
2. Lynryd Skynryd
I couldn't pick a single song. It's the whole band.
This was the wife-beater's favourite band. Hearing any one of their songs immediately brings me back to a one-room basement apartment.
Not one of my favourite memories, but I can't deny it's influence.
3. New Model Army: Vagabonds
One of the first songs I ever heard by this band, and it grabbed me right away. It's the one track that never fails to move me onto the dancefloor.
4. Mindless Self Indulgence: Backmask
This is my roadtrip album. This song in particular reminds me of driving really fast over mountain roads and shouting along with the lyrics. We listened to Mindless Self Indulgence almost constantly on the road to and from C6, and no matter how bad things got it filled my brain with piss and vinegar.
5. Dead Kennedys: Holiday in Cambodia
The first song I ever danced to. No kidding.
caspervonb was DJing, and when he put this song on, J propelled me out onto the dance floor with a doc martin in the small of my back.
It was good times with people just newly friends, with all the potential that lies there. Years later some of those friendships are gone and some are stronger than ever, and this track reminds me of all the good parts about getting here.
6. Kim Wilde: Kids in America
Given who dragged me into this, it's only appropriate that this song keeps coming up.
I just bought GTA3: Vice City, and every time this song pops up on the soundtrack it reminds me of
lee_chaos dragging me (and others) up on stage. It makes me think of friends and everything coming together and the right time in the right place.
I start singing along every time I hear it.
