Pompeii was stunning. Nothing like looking at the ruins of a city that was destroyed almost 2000 years ago to make you feel small. Many of the frescos and mosaics are still mostly intact.

I did not[1] realize how big it is. Apparently excavation has been going on since the mid 17 hundreds, and 2/5 of it are still buried.

Vesuvius was weird. There was a cloud on top of it, so we could not actually see into the crater, because it was full of fog. Climbing it was kind of like being on the moon. Nothing alive, just multi-coloured volcanic rock everywhere and howling wind. You ever see clouds in a strong wind, whipping through the sky with tails of boiling mist being shredded off the edges as they go.[2] Just like that. Only directly in front of you as you walk.

Today we woke up in Florence. Easily the most beautiful city I have ever seen.

[2] No question marks either.
