Not just Canada. It happened here last month! People were even hording shovels and selling them at inflated prices. They were also charging $65 per hour for shoveling roofs, something that's usually a very low paid job done by people who don't know how to do anything else.
Mind you now that you mention it, if we hadn't gotten the support beam in this year, it probably would have been a really really good idea to have shoveled ours.
I've had to shovel my grandparent's roof up in Elk Lake--that's about three hours north of North Bay. Nice thing is that it's a dry cold up there, so you can do it in a t-shirt and not get frostbite. At Easter one year, the snow was up past my shoulders (and I was the height I am now)on the ground. On the roof it was a few inches shorter due to melt from the house heat coming out...we had to shovel it down to no more then 6 inches on the roof 'cause the roof was creeking.
I was just reading the link and thinking "Aye, a fine headline from the Denley Moor Tribune" when Dom walked by (naked, but that's not important right now).
D - WTF? B - Toronto's got a shovel blight! D - Maybe they should talk to some Yorkshiremen.
Oh, yeah. A number of buildings collapsed because the weight on the roofs got too much for them. It happens around here, especially when you get about 2 feet of snow on them and then it rains and makes it even heavier... Most roofs around here don't have a steep enough pitch for the damn stuff to slide off, even when they're metal.
