I've never understood why people denigrate getting old.

There have been a bunch of times when I was pretty sure I was never going to get old. And I thought it sucked.

The creaking joints kinda suck, but the ease of Making Things Happen When It's Time makes up for it.

The body maintainence starts getting annoying and bothersome. Sometimes worse than that. Getting things done require more time and effort. On the other hand, I don't care about getting things done that used to be oh-so-important but not so much now.

there are things i don't like about getting old.

however, i like the alternative less.

(i'd really love to be able to stay up for twenty hours at a time and be functional, which i could do when i was eighteen. bah!)

I can still do that, I just have to sleep more the next day.

OTOH, there are lots of things I can do now that I would have loved to have been able to do when I was eighteen.

There are definitely cultural factors in play. Age doesn't seem to get much cred in the West.

Getting old is far, far superior to the alternative. It annoys me when people older than I warn me about how horrible it will be for me to get to be 70; I always tell them that I'll be delighted and surprised to get there.

My 4-year old daughter asked me recently if I missed being a kid.

I thought about it for a second, but it didn't take me long to answer in the negative. I get to play whenever I like, watch cartoons, hang out with friends and play video games, *and* it can involve staying up til whenever and imbibing whatever I please, *and* I don't have to deal with the crappy parts of being a kid.

I told her I miss being small, though. Then I picked her up, brought her to bed, and tucked her in.

Me too. Which makes me feel like everything else is "bonus time" and a total gift. I just can't understand when people lie about their age... For me, each of those years was well *earned* and I'm not just going to ignore/degrade them as if that time never happened.
