I wonder if all those anti-vax articles would be less likely to be at the top of google results and therefore easier to refute if all the actual science wasn't hidden behind a fucking paywall.

I've seen this sentiment around a lot lately (not just on the anti-vax issue, but on anything political). And I'm increasingly convinced that it plays a huge role in why the world seems to be taking a hard-right turn.

I know that quality journalism takes money but...they need to find another way.

Yes, they would, sadly.
Most people can't read actual science, myself included.
Pop science we can all read.

(And be disgusted by, like the Fox News guy who DOES NOT WASH HIS HANDS because he doesn't believe in germs).

I think it would help to a certain degree, because there are always those folks who have both the time and energy to Prove A Motherfucker Wrong, and will DIG through data to support a factual conclusion.

But I also saw this on twitter recently:

"The amount of energy necessary to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it". Or, having recently re-read Pratchett's "The Truth", "A lie can run round the world before the truth has got its boots on".

Another reason to flee academe: I did SO MUCH WORK that NO ONE WILL EVER READ. After fourteen years in, I concluded that it is in fact a gatekeeping industry and no more, despite thousands of talented people working there. (Who have very little power over the revenue streams.) It's only good to get what you need from it and then get out. It's a huge issue, agreed.

Don't get me started on academic publishing. Journals, especially science journals, are behind massive paywalls unless you're at a university. The irony: Taxpayers pay for this research, universities support and pay the staff and provide the space, the people who write it spend years and tons of money honing their craft.

Yet, the only entity that profits in this model is the publication, who takes on none of the work and none of the cost of producing the work. The authors don't get paid. The university doesn't get paid. The taxpayers outside the academic system have to pay anywhere from $20-$200 to read the article. HOLY FUCKING SHIT NO WONDER NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT THIS WORK.
