There's that, and also one of the themes I've been mulling for the past couple of years is that one of the strong traits of (at least old-school) goths is a healthy, if not overdeveloped, sense of humour and self-mockery. The morbidity may have even stemmed from less gloom'n'doom than "I'm going to admire what you hold obscure and sacred, and laugh at what you fear." In any case, I like it a lot...
