Seems like nowadays every new living space has a counter thing with stools. I don't know anyone who actually uses the stools - I have a theory that it's mostly to make it look like there's a place to eat, even though people will still just eat in front of the TV (on a couch) or in front of the computer (at a table or desk).
If I had money to rebuild my kitchen, which I don't, I might change out the half-wall around two sides to something that had countertop and drawers underneath, because I'd like more work space and storage space, but I wouldn't have stools. I can see that most of my neighbours who have listed their apartments for sale have had the half-wall replaced with island+stools, though.
