Goddammit. I just walked downstairs, went to put something in the toaster and went, huh, why is there water all over everything. Then I looked up.

It has been raining here for the past four days straight, so it might be coming in the join where the kitchen meets the main part of the house. The contractor will be here tomorrow so I'll tell him about it.

OR it's coming from inside the house. (The call is coming from inside the house!) I just got out of the shower, which is very close to that part of the room. And I had noticed the drain is getting slow, so it's possible something is backing up underneath. So that means prying the drain cover out of the floor to check it out. (The cover is sealed to the floor tiles with grout, which never made any sense to me. How am I supposed to clean it?)

This fucking house, I swear to shit.

In other news, rent just hit $3000 a month in this city, so ha ha, not going anywhere.

April
6 – Plan your epitaph day: what message would you like your headstone to send out to the future?
7 – World Health Day: Founded in 1950 by the World Health Organisation. What could you start to do today that will have a positive effect on your health?
8 – Zoo Lovers Day: Do you think zoos do an important job in teaching and conservation or do you think it is time to stop keeping animals in captivity?
9 – Name Yourself Day: Maybe you always felt like your name didn’t reflect who you are, or maybe you just want to try something new. If you could re-invent yourself for one day by choosing a new name, what name would you choose?
10 – International Safety Pin Day: Invented in 1849, where would we be without them? Or do you think there is less of a place for them in modern life than there was in the past?

6. Finally getting caught up on my sleep. 7. Same thing I do every day, lots of exercise and trying to stay out of jail. 8. Given how fast species are becoming endangered and threatened, zoos are the only thing presenting even a small speed-bump to extinction. 9. I actually did change my name, I think I posted about it here. I've thought about changing it again to something more gender-neutral, but knowing me I would pick something even harder to spell. In general I think names are just handles, change 'em a bunch of times if you want to. 10. A day celebrated by punks everywhere.

11 – Eight Track Tape Day: Eight Track Tape Day recognizes an era that was here and gone in a short 20 years. Are you old enough to remember eight tracks? Some technologies, like the Betamax, never caught on even though they were the superior product. Can that be said of eight tracks?

I am old enough to remember eight tracks. Awful clunky things - and I mean that quite literally, they used to make a godawful thump when they were switching tracks. Sometimes in the middle of a song.

When I was sixteen a friend got her drivers licence and free use of her parents' old car, which was one of those old station wagons with the fake wood trim down the sides. The radio antenna had been snapped off so the only way we could get radio reception was if I sat on the hood and put one finger in the hole where the antenna used to be and held my other hand up in the air. I swear I am not making this up.

But it did have an eight track player. Eight tracks were already obsolete technology and the only one we still had hanging around was an old copy of Neil Diamond's Greatest Hits. So that was what I listened to non-stop for the entire summer. I still twitch if Sweet Caroline comes in a bar somewhere.

Then one day some record store cleared out an old storage room and put a big pile of eight tracks on sale for 50 cents each and we stocked up on music for the car. And had a ceremonial binning of Neil Diamond's Greatest Hits.

Since it is obvious that I'm not going to be able to use my May vacations for unpacking the storage locker, I've been looking at the calendar and thinking I'll just slice them up and use them for appointments. The Old Man has three separate appointments at two different hospitals this month. I have to get a tooth pulled (ugh) and get some prescriptions renewed and I'm probably a year past due on getting my eyes checked. So I could deal with all that shit.

Also, you know, look up some youtube videos on how to pry the drain cover out of my shower floor without breaking anything.

Accomplishment of the weekend: Getting all the Old Man's medical receipts sorted out for his taxes. I had been putting it off because I knew it was going to be an enormous pain, but I finally sat down with all the pieces of paper that I've been stuffing into various file folders and listed all of it on a single spreadsheet. There was some archaeology involved, but I'm pretty sure I've found everything.

So one more thing crossed off the list.

Hrm. Well, if it's upstairs I'm guessing you can rule out a broken pipe and tree root.
Why would they grout the drain in? Baffling. Is it metal or plastic?

My guess would be a build up of hair, gunk and soap. But that's being optimistic.

Was the water in the kitchen funky smelling?

Jesus. That's more than my mortgage by A LOT.

I believe you. The human body is such a good conductor for AM radio signals.
I guess a coat-hanger didn't work?

YIKES. We were paying $3300 inclusive for four people when we skedaddled seven years ago. Watch the tidal wave coming down the 401. Because rent's only $2000 here ... >.> Oh, wait, because there isn't even anything available here. Parents with money are buying houses + condos for U of G students because the first-year housing guarantee ended in 2020. Everyone else commutes, transfers, or drops out.

Holy shit, the drain. Give it a break, house. :/
