warning: swearing ahead

I stepped on a nail today.
It's just been that kind of a week.
------------------------
You know, the one thing that is guaranteed to turn me into a raving, psychotic harpy is to put me in a position where I don't know what's going on. I totally lose my grip.
I had a relationship a while back with somebody who would very seriously listen to what I had to say on that particular matter, agree with me that full disclosure was the way we were going to do things -- and then never tell me anything. And then, of course, insist that I was the one who was being unreasonable when I went apefuck over it. It made me into a serious nutjob for the duration of the relationship and for a good long time after it.
I'm still a nutjob about this. I have a Big Red Shiny Button installed on my forehead. The boyfriend person has bounced off the bloody thing a couple of times already, and I figure that's just going to happen every once in a while -- it's just too honkin' big to keep out of the damn way.
*sigh*
At least I know it's my problem.
That's something. Right?
------------------------
And in Big Bastard Corporation land, Nike is buying out Converse. This makes me very very very unhappy.
Maybe if I can run out and buy 100 pairs right now, Nike won't get any of the money yet. Whaddyah think?

Date: 2003-07-11 09:05 am (UTC)While this news is kind of sad for nostalgic reasons, it's worth noting that Converse has been similar to Nike in one respect for the past couple of years: After escaping bankruptcy protection in 2000/2001, the new ownership group shut down the Converse production facilities in the USA (http://www.chucksconnection.com/usa.html) and moved them to overseas sweatshops. So while they were still a privately owned company, they were contributing to the same evil system as Nike, Reebok and all the other corporate behemoths.
But then again, it's nearly impossible to find a pair of running shoes that aren't made overseas...
crap
Date: 2003-07-11 10:23 am (UTC)I've often thought of trying to find a cobbler who could make me custom-order boots exactly to my own specifications. They'd be expensive as all fuck, but hell, I'm paying stupid amounts of money now for shoes that fall apart in a year.

Date: 2003-07-11 10:42 am (UTC)Some of the "western" boot places on Yonge might do a non-cowboy thing for you; they sometimes carry motorcycle boots and such, and do a lot of custom work, although that might just be custom embellishments.
Barring that, head down to the One of a Kind Craft Show in November at the Ex. There are at least two or three cobblers there with hand-made shoes; I'd bet any of them would do something custom for you, if you're willing to pay their somewhat higher prices.
