Some days breakfast is a cheese sandwich and a shot of bourbon.

I had intended, once the holidays were finally over, to post about how exhausted and peopled-out I was, about how parts were great fun, and parts were frustrating, and how I was looking forward to getting back into my normal routines etc.

Instead I am posting about how my mother died on Thursday.

Some friends decided that New Year's Eve was going to spent burning 2019 in effigy and so we built a fire in my backyard and chucked in drawings and other burnables from the shitty shitty year just finished. I threw in some obituary cards left over from D's funeral. And I said, out loud, with my actual face hole, "All I ask of 2020 is that it not kill anybody I care about. I don't think that's too high a bar to set."

Three days later, I'm texting to E, "2020 HAD ONE FUCKING JOB!"

On the plus side, (if there can ever be a plus side) it was fast and peaceful. She laid down for a nap and went in her sleep. No months of struggle in the hospital this time, and I am very glad that she was spared that particular flavour of bullshit.

Maybe that's why it hasn't really sunk in yet.

There is mounting evidence that I have recently developed an allergy to one of our cats, which is... sub-optimal to say the least.

(And having developed an allergy to one cat, the chances of progressing to be allergic to all cats is more likely than not.)

And I am not rehoming our cats.

A lot of the Canadians on my reading list are talking about this story

Canadians are deeply concerned about climate change and are willing to make adjustments in their lives to fight it — but for many people, paying as much as even a monthly Netflix subscription in extra taxes is not one of them, a new poll suggests.

I call bullshit.

Because I know what I would answer if a pollster asked me the question.

I would answer, "We know the names of the people who right now are making billions piloting the industries causing climate change. We know who is funding the misinformation campaign designed to convince people that climate change isn't real and protect them from the repercussions of their actions. We know the names of the politicians and the lobbyists who are responsible for the de-funding of infrastructure that makes it harder for the rest of us to live sustainable lives *cough*Doug Ford*cough* and the ones who buy pipelines and give subsidies to oil companies while wrapping themselves in a green flag *cough*Trudeau*cough*.

Taxpayers are already paying more - in medical costs as air quality goes down, in insurance costs as flooding & fire increases, in having to pay to put fucking air conditioning I don't even want in a house that just keeps getting hotter every year. Take the money from the oil companies, strip them of every last fucking penny of company profits and use it to clean up their crap. Their shareholders and CEOs can have whatever is left when they've paid for the mess they made."

And that would be recorded as a "no".

Back in court with all the other rejects. Apparently everybody else has also figured out that these things never start when they tell you, I wandered in at quarter past and I was one of the earliest to arrive.

It's also quite comfortable in the waiting room today. I guess a building this massive just takes a while to cool off after a weekend of sitting empty.

I am so utterly done with this place and this climate. I'm spending $60 a month on medication just to try and breathe. I am done with feeling like I've inhaled a wet sweat-sock. I'm done with not being able to sleep, and migraines and skin rashes from the fucking heat.

We spent the first 10 years in this house using nothing fans and that was enough. But each year the summers get hotter and longer and I just can't fucking do it any more. And Canada obviously doesn't give a shit about anything but extracting as much money out of the ground as possible to make sure oil companies continue to turn a profit.

I don't even like air conditioning but it's now moved to the head of the list of things to spend money on the next time we have some[1]. I just wish to fuck I could charge the cost to the fuckers who just cancelled all the wind and solar projects.

[1]Ha ha ha ha. That's a whole 'nother rant.

Fuck summer. Seriously. I am so fucking done with not being able to breath. I've been dealing with constant dizziness and nausea for weeks now because of the shitting smog and I am so tired of it. My chiropractor put my ribs back in on Friday[1] and by Sunday I could feel that one of them is out again.

I managed to get my stupid ass trapped outside when Portugal won some sportsball thing yesterday. (I live in a Portuguese/Brazilian neighbourhood.) So of course the streetcars couldn't get through the mess and I had to walk home. I don't mind that people want to celebrate, but why do they have to do it in their cars? Because of course everybody was idling in the traffic jam, and I could feel the waves of heat coming off the vehicles. I took back alleys for as much of the way as I could, but I was still seeing spots floating in my vision by the time I stumbled in the door.

I can't wait until it gets cold again. I love the days in February when all the crap just crystalizes out of the air and you can see for a million miles. That's what I want.

All my partners want to move some place warm when we retire. Fuck that, they can come visit me in Siberia.

[1] Four this time. Which means I've stretched the cartilage on another one[2]. Yay.
[2] Asthmatics tend towards overdeveloped muscles around our rib cages from struggling to breath. So much so that "barrel-chest" used to be a defining feature of people who grew up with childhood asthma. It's less of a thing now that the drugs are better, but it's still not unheard of for asthmatics to dislocate upper ribs when we cough.
