About two seconds after I finished perusing [livejournal.com profile] markeris's LJ, and responding to this post about how nobody at your High School reunion gives Two Shits that you now want to pretend you have a hottie playmate and make $300K a year - I stumbled over one of those "what are they doing now" ads. You know the ones, they have the really sad yearbook pics in the ads.

So I thought what the fuck, went to the website, plugged in my high school and had a look around.

And I actually found a few names of people who I thought didn't suck too badly. That was kinda cool. Wonder what they are doing now...

Then I hit somebody's name who I had had a serious crush on back in the day. For like, years.

Well, fuck.

Unfortunately you have to pay money to get the email address, otherwise I would totally have dropped the man a line.

Google and other free search engines can work amazing wonders in finding people. I've tracked down several old friends with it.

Well I don't actually have any money right now, so that helps.

Oh man. I went about it the same way, and there was the fee and I went "Screw you!" This was five years ago and I'm STILL getting spam.
(I could block them... why the hell haven't I?!)

it goes against everything I wrote, but at the start of my off the rails period in 2002 (which is the one you met me during)I had effectively finished my employment but had 2 months left to serve, and made it quite clear that I didn`t feel contractually obliged to do data entry as a senior manager, but was quite happy to f**k around with a commodore 64 emulator in my office to ensure I was actually on site to fulfil my contract should they find appropriate work. Obviously I also surfed t`interweb harder and faster than ever before and ended up on friends re-united. Sat there, as I was, with my job ending and the woman I wished to marry having f**ked off to Australia, i was a bit disheartened to see all my chums married with kids, decent jobs in IT and working on and off in Australia. Then I suddenly realised that they all had identical entries wheras I was doing what i`d always wanted to do on the sly despite not matching up to the normal levels of adult success, and would thus perhaps be the only person worth talking to in the group should those in the conversation wish to not have their own lives repeated back at me.

I didn`t feel any better than any of them, but I no longer felt worse.

I have this theory.

In my theory, the afterlife is similar to the Viking stories of Valhallah, where we while away our time between now and the final battle by drinking, fucking, fighting and telling stories.

And the Gods, they like the drinking fucking and fighting pleny, but they really like the stories. Not having ever been alive themselves, they take delight in our tales of mishap and adventure, are enraptured by sagas of loves lost and gained, are hugely entertained by the comedy of our most embarrasing moments. And in the way of audiences everywhere they shower the majority of their favours on the mortals who they find the most entertaining.

And I figure there are parts of my life that are better than other peoples' and parts that are worse. I've had a lot of fun, done things that make me cringe to think about and made an impression on a few people along the way. I'm not unhappy with where I have ended up in the least. (Well, I'm unhappy about the midnight shifts, but that's a minor detail in the grand scheme of things.)

But man, when I hit that afterlife, there is going to be a line-up of dieties waiting to buy me drinks.

You know, I've dated people just because I knew it would make a good story. I don't know if that makes me a cad, or entertaining or both.
