Hopefully they chose to leave before suffering the fate others are being subjected to.
After the initial public outcry over the way re-registration of male aliens from the Middle East was being handled, with the disappearing of many people... the whole issue simply disappeared form the public mind. Now immigration enforcement is part of Homeland Security, and the FBI has immigration authority as well. Supposedly voluntary interviews are resulting in detention and deportation of those who refuse to cooperate, and even of those who do cooperate.
And every day I wonder just what it will take to get my country back.
And almost more so because it's local for me. I have no first-hand knowledge of this, but I'm definitely going to be keeping my eye out for any information I can get. I wonder if the Detroit News or Metro Times has done any articles...
Yah, me too. Still, here's a link to my earlier comment on the matter (http://www.livejournal.com/users/mactavish/1276297.html?thread=6099593#t6099593). Color me deeply suspicious of both the situation and the person reporting it. I'll provide updates as we find out more... that is, if we ever do.
Crap. Not my lock, so I can't fix it. Here's the text of my post that I linked to, though:
You know, this is troubling on its face... but there are also a lot of other possibilities that don't seem to have been considered. If this teacher has the student's phone number, and a work contact for the mother, I'm sure she also has, or can get, their address. Did they move unexpectedly? Do their neighbors know anything? How about the landlord? Does the mother's employer, or her coworkers, know anything? The phone disconnect is unusual -- if they'd been involuntarily detained, as the writer implicates, who had the phone turned off?
It strikes me as a post from someone who cares, but isn't willing to put in the effort to find out what's really going on. She's comfortable in her assumptions, and she's looking to score some points by playing on people's sympathies. Why hasn't she actually put some effort into trying to find out what's going on?
One of the people in the comments section links to a story about Immigration agents questioning Iraqi immigrants in the area (http://www.detnow.com/news/0303241202.html). One of the lessons that we have to take from the September 11th attacks is that there are people who will come to this country and misrepresent themselves in order to attack us. That's one of he reasons we check on immigrants. Is it always done properly? Of course not. There's room for improvement, and we need to make sure that we don't do more damage to ourselves as a nation by doing these checks improperly. That doesn't mean we should abandon any checks on immigration, though.
The whole thing smells to me of a situation made up to provide an illustration for a point. It's totally unverifiable, and the author hasn't done some things that would seem to be logical and reasonable to deal with the situation. Betcha we never see any followup that tells us what really happened to Ali, either.
I find it hard to believe that a kid can just disappear from a school without some follow-up -- I assume there are truant officers in Michigan? If a kid moves to another school district there would be records transferred. There has to be some system in place for starting a paper-trail on missing students.
I mean, if the kid has has been hanging out at the video arcade for the last three days there would be some way of figuring that out.
If, as she says, other moslem students are starting to disappear out of their classes, I would expect that other people will start to notice it.
