Rome is INSANE.

I always thought I was an "assertive" driver. These people put the fear of God into me.

Lots of Gods in fact. Every time I turn a corner I trip over something that's 2000+ years old. Nobody even seems to notice.

I am going to die by cheese. If my feet don't fall off first.

Did I not warn you about the drivers?
The whole of Southern Europe & the Middle East is like that.

Glad you're having fun.

Ahh, how I don't miss that. How I used to be willing to drive my friend's motorino (the vespas) I'll never know. The thought makes me cringe now.

Dying by cheese and gelato in Rome would be my ideal way of going.

Eat plenty of ice cream for me (the fruit flavors don't use milk products so you should be safe)!

It's in everything. It's delicious. I keep eating it.

I'm lactose-intolerant.

BC & I hit a store last night for dinner. We bought a "gorgonzola picante", which was my favourite - so sharp and crumbly it made my head pucker, a brie that was pretty much like what you'd get at home but so creamy you could spread it like butter, and a cheese BC just pointed at and can't remember the name of - rubbery in a waxy rind, with a subtle flavour. We ate them with smoked salmon and crusty bread and washed it down with a wonderful Chianti.

They put mozzerrella on everything - in the south getting Mozzerrella on your pizza means a big blob in the centre. Salata caprese is tomato served with thick slices of creamy white mozzerrella all drizzled with olive oil and oregano.

First rule of Italian Driving, what is behind you does not matter.

Oh and the old stuff, they have so much they recycled a bunch of it to make plaster. (Marble, when burned at high temperature is used to make plaster). Thus, a great deal of Roman art and architecture are now the coatings of buildings and rooms.

They use it for everything. Every curb is made out of marble.

Rome is life, pure and simple. It's a place of wonders.

Glad you're having a great time. Remember to have lots of coffee, too. And gelato, of course. And odd meals in little restaurants off the beaten track.

You think Rome is insane, you should see Napoli. I discovered that the secret to dealing with Italian traffic is simply to act with complete confidence, but keep your eyes open.

On the subject of old stuff, I refer you to my Rome post
