Verona has something I have not seen elsewhere in Italy - wide streets and sidewalks. Also green common space. Most of the gardens we have seen in other cities were located on roofs and behind private walls.

They have an arena that was built in the first century, and it's still being used for operas. The outer wall was demolished during an earthquake and some of the marble steps have been reinforced with wood, but it's still operating. It seats 20,000 people.

My little North American heart just boggles.

Back in Rome for a couple of days, then home on Saturday.

PS Siobhan's tiny bladder tour of Italy.
Rome: no toilet seats
Naples: no seats. no toilet paper.
Venice: no seats. and the toilets are on the floor.

Ok, mental note: when going to Italy get squat form down and bring sharmin :)

It was almost a dealbreaker but, even with the toilet situation, I still want to visit :) (And I'm very much enjoying my 'desktop travelling' reading your posts.)

So you are doing a hover manouver?
Naples: no seats. no toilet paper.
I always have a load of kleenex in my bag when travelling-for reasons like this.
Venice: no seats. and the toilets are on the floor.
The hole in the floor type? Saw that in France and was scared.

They actually do have a toilet, not just a hole. But it sits directly on the floor.

Very odd.

You'd think they'd realise that the lavatory has become more sophisticated since Roman times, wouldn't you? ;-p

I spend a lot of time in France so I'm reasonably used to this. Usually everything in France is clean, but IME, if it's not that clean, you're better off with the "on the floor" type.

I also carry kleenex with me everywhere when travelling (or, let's face it, attending a night club in England) just in case.

Rome: no toilet seats

When I was in highschool, I went on a trip to Italy organized by a teacher. One day while we were wandering around Rome, another teacher, who needed to pee, and had needed to pee for some hours, started singing: "There are no toilets in Roma." Singing which has been one of my jokes that no one gets (except a friend of mine who was there) ever since.

(Hi!)

I can sympathise.

I was surprised to find out how many are pay toilets, especially in places like train stations.

(And hi back!)

And to think, having a large bladder, I managed to miss these cultural experiences completely!

I have to plan my entire day around such things. I had hoped that the hysterectomy would give me more internal space for pee storage, but no such luck.
