At some point in the last couple of days, yahoo deleted at least two of my groups. I sent them an email about it, and this is the response I get back.

Any action taken is confidential. We will not release this information unless required to do so by law or under other similar circumstances. We are unable to make exceptions to this rule.

Fucking. Cunts.

I better back up the membership lists on my other groups pronto.

Hmm, weird. So does this mean that they were shut down for a TOS violation? Were you emailing them from the address you use to moderate the groups?

Not defending Y! here, and I'm heading on vacation tomorrow where I don't have the internets on a regular basis, but I *am* in kind of a position where I might be able to follow up on a ticket or support request.

I have no idea if it was a TOS violation or not. They won't tell me. I can't find anything that might have been considered a violation of their TOS.

One of the groups was TorontoPoly, which I created, but BC was the owner at the time of deletion. I was still the moderator. She was <booted off a bunch of her other groups as well, so we're wondering if they may have been targetting her specifically.

Well, do you want me to see if I can open up a ticket on it and find out what happened? Email me at my personal email address with yours and BCs yahoo IDs if you guys do.

I don't work in the same group but I can probably poke the right people. :)

Yahoo is a sinking ship, sad but true.

I hate Yahoo groups with what I'd always thought was an irrational hatred. Now ... maybe not so irrational.

Give me a good, old-fashioned email list any time...

They've been irritating me for years with their bordering-on-unusability issues.

I think I'm going to email my host and ask them if they can offer me a majordomo package.

Oh, also, you're welcome to use lists.ofdoom.com for any lists you want. I mean, that's what's being used for certain other recently-high-volume lists. ;)

It's not like running a mailing list manager strains machine resources...

No, not particularly.

A lot of ISPs have replaced majordomo with Mailman (http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/). I did a bit of kicking and screaming (I've been managing lists with majordomo for over a decade), but I'm finding it more stable and robust, and more configurable. The Web interface for administering the lists is the only downside, and I'm getting used to that.

Not that I'm advocating them, but is there any objection to using Google Groups instead?

Isn't that strictly web interface?

For administration? Probably. Now I can see how that is a limitation.

If you know a lawyer, it might be worth making them disclose by law. The Electronic Frontier Foundation might be interested also ....

were they both poly related?

One was poly, the other was queer.

Both local groups. Very odd.

Huh. My first thought was that they might be trying to get acquired by MySpace/News Corp.

Upon further consideration, perhaps someone decided that poly equates to bigamy, which is illegal, and used that as a basis to can the groups.

Yeah. I've had a few bad experiences with trying to run a mailing list off somebody else's server though - if they aren't getting paid for it, it's just not a priority. (Which is understandable.)

My host charges for majordomos. I'm going to email them and see if I can get a package deal on a bunch of them.
