Kinda depends on what the problem is, but if it's an issue where anything too solid is going to cause pain, my go tos would be mashed potatoes, ice cream, pudding, jello, mashed potatoes, overcooked pasta, mushy peas, milk shakes, mashed potatoes...
Lentils and eggs will give you a good source of protein. Why not try mujaddara (http://www.habeeb.com/mujaddara.recipe.html)? It's soft, delicious, reasonably healthy if you don't drown it in oil and can be made even when all fucked up on really good painkillers.
I'd avoid rice or risotto or anything that's small like that. I had issues with things getting stuck in the new void when I had my tooth pulled and I don't wish that on anyone.
I went with lots of those "soup at hand" containers. Mashed potatoes are good along with puddings and jellos. Lots of good suggestions above, too. Just keep textures in mind with the fact that you have a new hole for things to settle into - small lumpy things aren't so good.
Melt a beeswax candle and use the softened wax to plug the hole so food doesn't get into it. That's what I did when my temporary crown fell out until I could get to the dentist the next day.
As for unmentioned food, do you have an aversion to cottage cheese?
I get to go tomorrow to have a cavity filled in that's underneath an old crown. So bye-bye silver tooth, (yes, they'll have to take off the crown that's been in place since 1988) and install a new one.
mashed potatoes or yams...if you do the yams on the BBQ they are awesome ( in the skin then scrape them out, season and add butter or hemp oil or flax oil!
BBQ in skin squash
pureed roasted red peppers on olive oil and garlic
Pureed and/or mashed vegetables - any root vegetable will do, and combining them can be very tasty Shakes with protein powder Smooth dips - hummus, babaganouj Oatmeal
roasted butternut squash with butter squash soup mild curry of all kinds baked sweet potato with chili on top dates in all their incarnations chicken croquettes with applesauce corned beef hash & eggs Amy's soups are all really yum. falafel matzoh ball soup
Hummus and related pureed-vegetable and legume type spreads are really great, though you should avoid crackers/bread; even soft bread is horrible for getting stuck, and pulling bloody gooey wads of bread out of your gums is less than fun. (Oatmeal is bad, too, but nobody but me likes oatmeal anyhow.)
Eggs are really good. Boiled potatoes and carrots can be cooked until they're soft and are still good, especially with parsley. Some white fish can be extremely tender if you don't overcook it. Peanut butter.
Tofu in black bean sauce. That was a great blessing years ago when I had a wisdom tooth out. (Or, soft tofu in other sauces--basically, just the stir-fried bean curd and sauce.)
Applesauce (no, really, I ate a lot of applesauce a few weeks back). Canned pears (maybe other canned fruits). Sorbet and/or ice cream.
Um, cottage cheese, ice cream, pudding, oatmeal or other porridges, ice cream, finely chopped up tender meats, ice cream, mashed potatoes, rice, gravy, ice cream- or, if you put it in a blender set on high, damn near anything.
