If a job interview takes longer than the hour allotted for it, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Depends, did the interviewer and you keep getting into a great conversation and therefore getting through all their question took longer? Or did they only half pay attention to you and keep asking the same questions?

If it is the first, usually very good sign. If the second, bad sign.

In my experience, that's usually a good thing, unless it's just due to completely unorganized interviewers.
Either they're really interested, and it's a chance to get to know you better, or there are two candidates that they're interested in, and they're trying to be sure. Either way, they're interested, or they'd have been done on time or early.

Good thing. Provided you want the job, it is always, inevitably, a good thing.

I can't see it as bad thing. Either they like you or they really are considering you and someone else for the job and they want more info.

I'd say good. Not that I have much experience at these things. When do you expect to hear? If you get the job, I say you have a party, get wonderfully drunk, and beat the shit out of a cheap, charity shop phone. Good for the soul. :)

They said Wednesday

If you get the job, I say you have a party, get wonderfully drunk...

We actually have a tradition (started by BC and her former partner) that the person who gets a new job takes the partner(s) out for dinner.

beat the shit out of a cheap, charity shop phone.

Uh... Has Axel been telling you about my dreams?

Not a word. I swear. You have, however, told me how much you hate the phones, and I know it is what I would want to do. I bet some really cool stuff would come flying out if you hit one with a hammer!

Ah. I had a dream the other night that I beat a hole in some new drywall with the household phone. Axel came home from work and found it embedded in the wall.

I hate that you are so stressed, but I must confess to finding the image of the phone embedded in the wall completely hilarious.

In my experience it has not only always meant that I've got the job, but usually that I'd be working with someone I'm going to get along with really well. Good luck!

Agree with everyone else: it's a good thing. Have heard that interviewers generally decide in the first minute or two if they're NOT going to hire you, so going long would be pointless.

Best of luck!

Heh, I agree with all of these comments above - most places will try to get rid of you early if they don't like you. Good luck!

I hire my own staff with a few exceptions.

When I'm interviewing someone, I need to learn if they are comfortable engaging a complete stranger in a conversation. If a canadate can sell me on him/herself, well, certainly he/she would be able to sell shoes! Since I also train the staff, it's crucial that I'm going to get along really well with them. So longer interviews are always a good thing.

Good luck and I'll see you in 26 days!

Yeah, very good thing. If they didn't like you, why would they want to hang around talking to you for longer???
