When I was a teenager the mayor of Toronto lost his re-election bid because he suggested that gay people had rights and should just be treated like anybody else.

Now we have marriage, property rights, immigration sponsorship and adoption laws that treat everybody equally.

I'm proud of my country but I never forget that it took us a long time to get here.
