Axel introduced me to The Young Ones last week. I started off thinking it was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen. By the end of the DVD, I still thought it was the dumbest thing I've ever seen but I was still laughing my ass off at it. I think it's one of those things where you had to be there. "There" being communal living in the 80's.

Several days later we were talking about something completely different and it occurred to me that I used to know one or two people who were just like Vyvyan.

Come to think of it, I also knew a couple of people who were just like Neil.

...

Well, that's disturbing. Maybe that's the reason why 80's nostalgia is one of those things that I just don't get.

Rik: "I'm going to write a letter to the president."

Neil: "But Rik, you're an anarchist. You don't believe in presidents."

Rik: "Then I'll write to Echo and the Bunnymen. Dear Mr. Echo..."

Plus Dave Vanian's hair in the Nasty episode! Oh, I could go on and on. MTV showed the series a few years after it had aired in England and I bought the DVD when it came out.

I introduced Richie to the Young Ones when we first started going out. He thought it was the dumbest thing ever, but still enjoyed it.

He preferred (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103376/) which is just as silly, but of a later generation with two of the same actors including Adrian Edmondson who plays Vyvyan.

Glenn got me into the Young Ones. I loved it so damn much. Something we both noted is that two of the characters are genuine, while the other two are posers. Vyvyan is a punk rocker, Neil is a hippie. While Mike is a wannabe womanizer, and Rick is a wannabe anarchist. I also love how they apparently die in more than one episode, and how in each episode they feature different bands that don't suck. Awesomesocks!

I have to admit, I love the bands just randomly playing in the loo.

After you are inundated properly with Young Ones, you must attend to Filthy, Rich and Catflap. and Black Adder if you havent already.

Oh I love Black Adder. Haven't heard of the other one, though.

There's another really good British show called Chef. It's not as goofy, but it's pretty funny. It's about a chef with a ferocious temper, and the way it gets him in trouble at his high class French restaurant.

The Young Ones are one of my most precious memories from my teenagehood. For a start Alexi Sayle glorified Doctor Martens boots in song and I've had wearable a pair of docs in my possession ever since. Which also reminds me, have you had the pleasure of the handful of music videos that they made? "Living Doll" definitely made it to the Top 10 in Australia.
