The surgury "went well" according to my doctor. I remember nothing of course, the anaethesiologist saying "We're going to inject the anaesthetic into your IV now" and then the same voice calling my name to wake me up in the recovery room.

Afterwards, in my room, the surgeon held up his two clenched fists together. "It definitely had to come out. It was this big."

The morphine pump is the greatest medical invention ever. No waiting for the nurse to come by with a big-ass needle when you are pain. By the second day they unhooked me and I was able to wander around without a pole.

By the third day I was bouncing off the walls with boredom. Many thanks to the people who dropped by, phoned and sent well-wishes.

I am a bruise wrapped around an brand new hole. My lower abdomen is black and blue and red and yellow and purple and green. Every movement is a new education in just what the stomach muscles are responsable for. And forget sneezing. Or coughing.

The best part: I completely missed all the September 11 posturing.

The most disconcerting part: I don't smell like myself any more. That's weirding me out.

Yay!

I don't envy you the healing - an appendectomy was plenty for my taste - but I'm glad you're well and that it's all in the name of keeping you happy and healthy in the future.

Nothing can drive you battier faster than a hospital room. When I had complications after my gallbladder surgery (not quite as intense a procedure), all I wanted to do was get home.

It's good to see that you're home safe and sound. :)

Glad that you came through OK and are home safely.

Sorry that they didn't let you keep the Big Thing That Was Growing Inside You, though. That would've been a great conversation piece. ;)

My sister Nancy (the autistic sister) had a six inch tumor removed in the same way a couple of years ago and she wanted to keep it too! But they wouldn't let her, also muttering something about cutting it into pieces. Then she asked them, "Well, what color was it?"

It was apparently gray.

What color was yours Sio? :P

It didn't occur to me to ask. But judging by the colour of everything else that has come out of me in the last couple of days, I rather suspect it was red.

Red is a good colour to have come out of you. Much better than green or yellow.

hurray! so good you are well. I knew already a bit before but i am so happy for you, so glad you are ok.

you should post up a list of things you want:
chocolate
money
fav foods
a car you have admired...

then ask everyone you know for these things to aid in your speedy recovery. Work this to the max.

Welcome home. The scent thing might be temporary. I smelt odd for a few days after my last surgery but then was fine.

Very happy to hear that things went well. :)

Listen, about the funny smell, do you have tummy stitches? The kind that are done on the inside, and are supposed to disintegrate, over time? (I think they call this a "zipper", and you go back in about a week to get the major part of it taken out?) Well, I had those kind of stitches, and a weird funny smell that seemed to accompany them - and I would gross myself out by thinking it was the smell of rotting me. *heh* Um, hope that wasn't wholly inappropriate... :P

It wasn't a hospital smell -- it was definitely the smell of an animal, only the animal wasn't me.

I had staples, which they removed right before I left the hospital. I still don't quite smell right to myself, although it seems less foreign than it did. Either whatever I was smelling is wearing off, or I'm getting used to it.

Quite disturbing. That bothers me way more than the visual evidence of trauma.

That was Quick! I'm glad to hear you made it out ok. So how long are you going to be house ridden? I think I will come taunt you.

I had sugery down around that area (5" incision lower left just below the belt). Try not to move as much as possible. the first week or so makes all the difference in terms of recovery. Things stretch and break too easily the first week or so.

I look forward to incessant posting by you, since you can't do much.

GET WELL SOON!!!

PS: Sorry I didn't say bye that tuesday. I had an urgent need to drive at night. I'm weird like that.

Oh, I second this - the idea of not moving around much in the beginning. Me, I didn't listen to this advice, and immediately took off on a roadtrip to the East coast - now I have a nice big pink ribbony snail trail from belly-button to breastbone. (Which I'm rather fond of, when ya' get right down to it, but still, it does get kind of pinchy, sometimes.)

Yay!

Make everyone around you pamper you for as long as they (and you) can stand it, and heal quickly, ok?
