I declined to renew my paid subscription to LJ this time around, so I'm getting to see just how ugly it is when you have to use the default settings.

What's interesting is that apparently I'm an "early adopter" and that means that I have the option of moving to a Plus account where they put ads on the pages. I guess if you've been around for a while they figure you might have some readers. The terms don't tell you much about the ads, but some communities I read have video ads that start playing as soon as you load the page. I couldn't see them before as a paid user, so I guess that's what they're talking about. In return for the ad hosting I can keep some of the features like extra user icons and photo space.

I'm not big on inflicting ads on my friends so I won't be making the switch. I haven't yet decided if my new freeloader status is a permanent change or not. I guess we'll see how much the unpaid version end up annoying me. There's a sweet spot between, "irritating enough that I will pay extra to make them go away," and "irritating enough that I will get pissed off and vow to never give them another dime, the bastards".

They've been doing that Plus thing for a long time. I've seen one person who used it, but I think it was a bit of a dog.

I was just wondering the other day why there hadn't been a big LJ kerfuffle for a while. I guess folks stopped caring.

I've been a freeloader since 2002 and don't have any real issues with the default look (I am too lazy to customise anything), but I do thing DW has a much cleaner interface.

How LJ and DW stay in business I have no idea.
