You know I really really need coffee when I pour the beans directly into the coffee maker and forget to actually grind them first.

Been there; almost did something similar. Caught it in time. There are times when I wish there were coffee delivery service the way there was milk delivery service (in olden times;-)).

I would suggest having pre-ground coffee, but that doesn't stop this sort of thing happening. I have often mixed the ground-coffee, sugar and water in the cup and only then realised my error.
