Sabz is here, and Tetsab + 1 and we are all drinking various and sundry and I might be a teeny bit fxx00rd
Also I have no idea how to spell laundromat.
I was at the laundromat when my cell rang.
"Hey, I got two bottles of vodka that are so expensive I can't pronounce their names. Want to get fucked up tonight?"
"Sure. But I thought you were working?
"Long story, I'll explain it when I get there."
Zag ended up meeting me at the landramat and helping me cart home my heavy bags of wet clothes. The new roommate, a U of T student named Ethan, donated a couple of dried up limes and a half case of soda water and the three of drank tall glasses of vodka and soda while we hung my wet underwear around my bedroom. My weekly chores taken care of, we watched bad movies on Netflix and mocked the acting until Ethan pled defeat and went off to bed.
Zag picked up the remote turned off the television. "So I got fired today," he said.
"I figured it was something like that. So you liberated this liquor on your way out?"
"Yeah." He turned the remote over in his hands.
"So what happened?" I prodded him.
"It was really stupid," he said. "I was flirting with this guy and he was really into it. Then somebody walked in who I guess he knew and he just flipped, started calling me a fag and being really aggressive. So I told him to fuck off amd the manager canned me."
"Your manager is a fucking asshole," I said. He nodded but didn't looke at me. I watched his hands, turning the remote over and over again.
I tried again. "Did you really like there?" He shrugged.
"OK, so what is it?"
He put the remote down on the coffee table and after a long pause he finally said, "That's the first time I've ever been fired for being gay."
Zag has been my best friend since I was six years old. We lived through high school bullies, losing our respective virginities and moving to Toronto together. My chest tightened at the look on his face and more than anything I wanted to make it not true.
"It wasn't... It wasn't because you had a fight with a customer?"
"No. I saw the look on his face. He was waiting for an excuse."
It was going to be true whether I wanted it or not. I lunged forward and grabbed Zag in a long hug. We sat for a long time like that until he finally pulled away, rubbing the back of his hand on his face.
"Hey, have you seen that documentary about the vampires living together? Want to check it out? And pass me the bottle will yah?"
I shoved the vodka across the coffee table as Zag picked up the remote.
