Tomorrow is Winnowing Day, and my mother is being a complete fraz about it.
Everybody from the homesteading year is going dune-picking. Everybody. Even Margot, who is a month too old and so technically should have been placed in breeder year and Davi, who got virus sick and was held back from sentry year.
Mom says oh, traditions are important and everybody should be at Winnowing, it's how we got here blah-de-blah-blah-blah. Like we've have to sacrifice anybody for real for the last ten gen. I don't know why I'm supposed to care about what a bunch of helpless urbans had to do during Water Rise, like that wasn't hundreds of year ago.
This is the first year I'm old enough to go dune-picking and I'll be so mad if I'm the only one who can't go. Last year Fega's brother found a whole crate of metal! He's rich now, got to choose his own mate and everything.
Whever. Mother always goes with the other breeders, and there is always somebody pregnant or chasing after toddles, I'm sure I'll be able to slip out and meet up with the others from my year. Kirak fancies me so I'll get him to slide back and tell me where they're all footin'. And then I'll find the best salvage, enough to get the house fixes and help with the toddles and all will be forgiven.
Then even mother will have to admit that salvage is way more important than tradition.
