How the fuck is it September?

***

Work gave company laptops to our entire department, which should hopefully help with some of the slowness and clunkiness of working remotely. I had to go into the office yesterday to pick it up, so while I was there I cleared out my desk. I mean, I don't know that I'm going to be moved when this is all over, but I also don't know that I won't be - and given how much money the bank has sunk into moving everybody into work from home this year I'd be pretty shocked if some bright spark didn't look at the cost of leasing all that prime Toronto real estate and think you know....

Man, I can collect an awful lot of crap if you plunk me down in one spot for a couple of years.

The vacation time that had originally been set aside for the much-lamented Australia trip is coming up. Axe and I have been trying to figure out how to rearrange the house to fit the new-to-us furniture, and well, the paint has 8 years (I think? Maybe?) worth of dings in it so we're going to use a week to repaint and defrag. And hopefully throw out more stuff. (Where does it all come from? I swear there is one of those cornucopia horns somewhere in this house, but instead of food it spits out coloured markers and old videotapes and ripped jeans and rusted screws and wicker baskets and boxes of envelopes.)

After that Axe is going to the US to visit the girlfriend. I think he's off his wick - not so much because of the visit, but because he's only allowed to enter the country by air. If he could drive down he could make the entire trip without contact with a single other human being, but instead he has security, waiting rooms, taxis, and of course being stuck in a box with however many people for a half hour. Twice

Once he gets back he has to quarantine in an AirBnB for two weeks, because there is no physical way for him to do it here. I'll be dropping off his computer and some groceries once he gets in. Maybe a cat, if the landlord says it's OK.

***

I woke up at 3 AM this morning and could not get back to sleep no matter how hard I tried. So now I'm at work. I feel like somebody threw sand into my eyes.

Long weekend coming up, very tired wahoo.

Last week's New Scientist had an article about how the flight itself isn't nearly as risky as previously thought, especially the way they are ventilating planes now. Apparently only one person can be proved to have caught Covid on a flight.

But as you say there's still the security, waiting rooms, taxis etc.

My sister is in BC right now after taking a short flight from Alberta. She had to get tested before the trip and is still staying 6ft away from our parents (and staying at an AirBnb). She got to go zip-lining with our dad down a mountain and I am a wee bit jealous. :-) But also it's doing a number on my head that I would need a Very Good Reason[tm] to be able to see my parents right now.

I went back to my office for the first time since March a couple/few weeks ago, I don't tend to accumulate a lot of stuff since transport both ways is always by bike, but I'm in an odd headspace about my steel toed Docs. I left them there since that's what I bought a new pair for, but leaving expensive boots just abandoned for months... not that I have anywhere to wear them. I should clean and polish all my at home boots at some point, could be good meditation.

Best of luck with this round of de-crufting!

Just me being practical here: does he have travel health insurance? A hospital stay could be a disaster.

Re expensive shoes - I have a mountain of shoes at work and they're all still there (I will never wear them anywhere else and I had to take all my hardware home) except the Fluevogs - no way was I leaving those unattended!

My mother isn't well but I can't really go to Canada until I don't have to quarantine when I get there, because otherwise I'd had to take a load of unpaid time off work. (Or stay up all night to work and I don't think I can make that fly).

To this point: If he has health insurance check that it's still valid. My parents were in the US at the beginning of all this nonsense and hot-footed it back when their insurance company emailed them and said they were ending all coverage because the risk is too great.

Wow. There was something recently about OHIP ceasing to cover you abroad as well. Yep, here it is:

Same, my mother is in Florida. She was hospitalized for two weeks with double pneumonia, likely COVID (but with a negative test, which is puzzling), and I couldn't do a damn thing about it.

This is what I hate about having to fly down to the USA to see B. I don't want to be stuck in COVID hell in a sealed box. But I just try to clean as much as I can, not use the bathroom on the plane, and wear the mask the whole time. This time I'll also wear my face shield. Good luck to Axe <3

I'm convinced the only reason we have an office is the bottom has fallen out of the market, otherwise, my chairman would have sold.

Man, I can collect an awful lot of crap if you plunk me down in one spot for a couple of years.

Since starting this job in '15 (and facing a redundancy in '15) I've kept almost nothing on my desk. I could never go back and feel OK. It's been nice.

Same. I mean, who would want to go to that shithole? Now? I can't understand why he can't drive. I mean, in a sensible nation I can, but not in the US.

I woke up at 3 AM this morning and could not get back to sleep no matter how hard I tried.

Same. But I got up and sugar-soaped my kitchen.

People were distancing as they could - Philadelphia was a crowded airport and people really couldn't distance well, but everyone was masked, which was good. I don't really wear a mask outside but I try to distance as much as I can and I will wear one or at least my face shield on crowded streets. (I find it extremely hard to breathe in the heat; I'll likely start wearing masks more as the weather cools off)

I found the airport security pretty strict about masking and hand sanitizing everywhere I went. They surely are in the Toronto airport. Also, they would step right in front of you when you got on and off planes to remind you to keep your mask on, and tell people to put theirs on if they weren't.

Yeah, they're being pretty careful, which is good to see.
