I should have posted about Little Free Library today instead of yesterday - I got an email from them this morning about their launch of Read In Colour, "a new initiative bringing diverse books to Little Free Library book-sharing boxes around the world".

The adult members of my family don't really need or want more stuff, so what I usually do for Christmas is donate money in their name. One of the places I get gifts from is Plan Canada's Because I Am A Girl program, which seeks to increase gender equality through education and literacy.

I have also occasinally funded Breakfast Club of Canada which I could stretch and say is a literacy charity, since it's pretty well-known that kids learn better when somebody feeds them. I usually participate in the United Way drives at work, which include a lot of literacy and education chartities. And of course the ubiquitous "buy-chocolate-from-my-kid-so-they-can-participate-in-this-educational-activity" shakedowns that happened regularily back when I was in the office.

And not literacy related, but I would never hear the end of it if I didn't promote the charity my sister started: FoodKind provides food to refugees, mainly in Greece.

Ooh, charity post! Awesome! I am a big, big fan of Kiva.org, where I have been funding micro-loans for years, mostly focused on women and education or women and work in places around the world. I like Kiva because you can select for gender and purpose of loan, as well as nation. Anyway, big fan.

I've made it to over 22,800 words with my novel, and am pleased with myself. Writing's really been a lot easier since I got An Important Thing to happen around 15K words and got into the part I had thought out better. No more 2K days so far, since I've been busy with studies and stuff, but I'm happy with my progress. I've kept writing every day, so when you get the chance, please add me to the days 22-28! :)

I'm poor at the moment and can't do a lot of charities, but I want to do some things to protect the environment, and earlier this year I started making a small monthly donation to Only One, a new international platform to protect the ocean and the ecosystems and human communities dependent on the ocean. It seems really good, with lots of expertise, paying a lot of attention to local and disenfranchised communities and what they know about the ecosystems around them, and having a lot of long-term projects.

I've also had a monthly donation to the Unicef set up for quite a long time, and am a member of a couple of environmental organizations in Finland.

Noodled on my story without profit all day, but then this evening the logjam broke free, and voila, words! Maybe only 500 of them, but words!


Charities: We're big fans of JOIN a Portland-local housing-first organization. (As in, get people secure, safe, no-strings housing FIRST, before trying to look at all their other problems. It's practical, it's economical, and it's HELLA more humane than many other strategies.) We also give to NAYA, a Portland-local Native American youth/family/community organization that does all kinds of things, from housing and education to foster-parent support. We're also supporters of Xerces Society, a conservation society for invertebrates. Invertebrates aren't nearly as charismatic as megafauna, but they're hella important to the ecological web, and protecting a particular species of bee, butterfly, or beetle often is a key component to legally protecting a given tract of land.

Your first question encouraged me to look up those numbers out of curiosity. Stratford made up a $20 million ticket sales shortfall in 2020 through individual donors plus federal emergency grants and loans. Their normal annual government grant funding (Ontario and Canada arts councils) is around $4.4 mil on a $63 mil operating budget. This seems about par for major arts orgs. They must consistently run blockbusters to survive. (This, in turn, leads to diversity and innovation problems due to an inability to sell those things easily to the public, but that's a whole other mini-essay. Good curators and creative directors do their best to balance it as best as they can.)

I have no charities to report, although I do like supporting local organizations where I can, and I suppose many of my game bundle purchases have also supported various charities over time and space, since that's built in to their purchase prices.

Day 28 involved trying to get some of my queue back up to acceptable on the Giving of Grief, so at least a few thousands of words went into making that happen. It went well.

As for charities/fundraisers, I mostly donate locally or tied to occasions, but am also doing regular kiva micro loans. Otherwise, most goes into local animal welfare and environmental projects, but also into our village Red Cross; we're only having about 2k inhabitants (which counts as a small village in Germany ;op ) but, like many villages, have our own ambulance and fire brigade trucks, manned by trained volunteers as there isn't enough demand for pros. We don't pay anything for any ambulance ride or other such services, and their funding happens through the state; but like so often, the smallest units of these organisations get the fewest money as money is always sparse. We're donating directly to the unit in our village partly to support the small village unit idea, but mainly to show the volunteers our recognition, also because we've been needing their services already twice.
