Write Every Day: Day 7

Yesterday went very smoothly, so thank you for all the well wishes.

The good: The temperature has taken a cooler turn, so I am able to go back to writing at my desk. Which I did last night after getting home.
The bad: It's cooler because the sun is being blocked by a thick layer of smoke. All of Canada is on fire. I have been coughing non-stop today after being out in it for most of yesterday. I apologize to everybody downwind for my government, which has been very accurately described as three oil companies in a trenchcoat. (I've also seen it described as three logging companies in a trenchcoat, but you know, tomato tomato.)

Anyway, words happened. And at some point whenever I am hosting WED I remember that I haven't yet put my own name down and this time around it took exactly one week.

Checking in for day 3 and 6: I finally wrote something! Just letters but it’s something ♡

I keep checking the air quality metric but so far, apart from one day, it’s been okay. I’m not sure how long that will last.

I ended up wearing a mask inside for part of today and tomorrow's supposed to be worse and boy am I worried about how this summer is going to go as a whole.

Day 7: was supposed to do writing sprints with a friend over Skype but the friend isn't actually working on anything right now so it turned into a long catch-up and worry about the smoke (she's in Ottawa so it's worse for her right now). Did get my 10 minutes in and about 3/4 of a page or so.

The wildfires and smoke is really scary! The fire season hasn't started here in California quite yet (but is really scary to think about!).

I've never quite the experience you're having (minor versions), but at least you have masked to help (and I am guessing a purifier?).

If only we could figure out why fires were getting worse!

We have our furnace running with the air con turned off just so that the filter is taking some of the crud out. It smells less like a campfire on the inside of the house, so I think it's helping.

Today I learned.

A lot of older houses here have sleep-outs, or converted sleep-outs (I assume you don't have them there, but know what they are, but basically: enclosed verandahs.

My old bathroom was one such, and like many bathrooms/toilets of the era had a 10cm strip of flywire that was always open to the elements. It was hella cold in winter, and during the summer fires, if one was close enough: ash everywhere. It would build up, especially overnight.

Especially the summer of the nearby tyre fire.

Putting this here because I expect you're goth enough to wear it. I ordered one yesterday with the particulate/gas cartridges. I was thinking about it for a while bc an engineering prof at York recommended it. Then saw a meteorologist I trust wearing one in Ottawa this week. Can't hurt. Most of what I've been reading has been saying an N95 with a good seal so that's what I've been using.

We had a couple of days of smoke last summer too - not this bad, but you could definitely smell it - so I have the sinking feeling this is going to become a regular thing and I'm going to have to up my mask game at some point.
