I got so absorbed in what I was doing last night that I caught myself sitting with my nose about an inch from my paper squinting into the dark. So the being outside part is working out really well for me, but maybe I need to find a lantern or something if I'm going to do this every night.

When the neighbors burn my house down

Thank you! I think the turtles were sensibly under water (except for snoots) while the worst of it was going on. I envied them. Lol!

My sympathies on the loud. My neighbourhood tends to go for the scattered bangs over the entire weekend rather than one night of intense noise. (I'm not sure which is worse, but I'll take them both over the air show.)

Thank you so much. My immediate concern was that a stray half-burnt rocket would end up burning my perennial gardens to cinders, and they represent years of intensive labor and not a little outlay of cash, since I try to purchase native-grown species if at all possible. My next concern was for the roof of our house and garage. Thankfully, the immediate neighbors on both sides pretty much only do full-fledged fireworks on the night of the holiday, though on one side I do get the occasional weekend bottle rockets. *sighs*

I am with you, re: air show, being myself on the flight path of the nearest AFB.

It's not. I do have some citronella tea lights and some hanging lanterns to put them in, I just have to dig them out of storage. ("It's in a box somewhere." The eternal refrain.)

Jul 4: Spent most of the day faffing about in the way of lazy mid-week holidays, but I also write 500 words, which is not nothing.

Yay for absorbed writing! We've hung a string of tiny LED ligths under the roof of our pavillion so Siljan can still read late outside, as our previous lantern was attracting all the moths and insects which wasn't nice for them and annoying to us. ;op The tiny lights of the string must be too small a light source for a lot of attraction, as so far it's been fine. Siljan has also a small LED reading light you can clip to your book, and where you can also switch the light colour and light intensity which has been awesome but we've currently lent it to my father to try it out, and he tries to keep it. *g*

I have a little LED light that plugs into my laptop so I can see the keys. The idea of stringing some around the porch is really appealing. We have a porch light but it flickers and buzzes and like you say, it attracts all the moths.

Is this a check-in as well? (Just because you don't say.)
