Write Every Day: Day 19

Last night's Trek movie was First Contact. This is one of the few I've seen before and honestly I didn't remember much about it - not because I thought it was a bad movie, because it was actually fine. But because I was so outraged at the whole Borg Queen plot line. Here you have the guiding intelligence of a species that is so powerful it has conquered untold civilizations and the thing it most wants is... a boyfriend. Are. You. Kidding. Me.

(And yes, I have seen the argument that she is comparable to the queen bee in a hive, and I don't buy it for one second. The queen bee is not the boss, she has a job. And if she doesn't do her job the hive will just murder her and grow a new one.)

Some of my neighbours have organized a shovel party tonight to try and clear some parking spots. Honestly, this city is so hopeless.

For the 19th: I took a bit of a break after yesterday's deadline and instead of working on that thing, poked at the treat I didn't manage to finish for Candy Hearts. Didn't get far, though, the structural issue unfortunately didn't magically solve itself while I wasn't looking. *g*

First Contact is fine. The Borg Queen idea just doesn't made sense for the Borg, n ever did. I lost track of what they did in VOY (made it worse), but if I remember Picard maybe tried to salvage the idea? Maybe.

But the idea Data was just a boyfriend gets worse. She's got a mighty thirst only Picard can quench later on.

You just have to roll with the idea the Borg were aliens for some reason and accept the crazy.

THIS! First Contact is one of my favourite Trek movies, but this really is a major irritation. Ever sine I started to consciously thinking about plot I couldn't help thinking this plotline was force-created to make that Data plotline work, in the fashion of the boss demanding it against the opposition of the writer(s)... ;op


Checking in for days 16-20, still noodling away at that old fannish drawer fic. In addition to our reno project I'm currently having a super intense period of my voluntary job, so I'm more or less only managing an alibi sentence or so every day, but at least I DO manage it. ;op

Sometimes walking away from something for a little while helps me figure out what the solution is. (Although I have to admit, sometimes the only solution I can come up with is "start over".)

YES EXACTLY THAT THANK YOU. The whole slinky-cat-suit-ed-ness of it all too was just... no. Like, I'm here for fetish cyber femme shit, hell yes and thank you, but that completely defanged what was scary to me about the borg. It was a machine that didn't stop and couldn't be pleaded with or reasoned with, because it operated at a scale that obliterated individualism the same way a combine harvester plows through and... now... what if... bond villain borg? ;)

(I know it really landed for some people and I respect that... but... I have been forever disappointed in that choice)

Yes! Well put, that was exactly my problem with it.

The main plot lines of the movie - the borg on the ship and the events on the planet - were pretty good! I enjoyed them. But my memory of them was completely obliterated by the terrible choices that seemed to exist just so they could put in some sex.

(Actually I also remember the first meeting with the Vulcans, mostly because of the way tumblr grabbed it and ran.)
