MC:

Enza Supermodel

Toronto’s favorite drag queen, the one and only Enza Supermodel, has agreed to act as Mistress of Ceremonies for Catalyst. Let’s kick up our heels and party!

Bands:

Sheep On Drugs (UK)
www.sheep-on-drugs.com

UK sleaze merchants Sheep on Drugs are back with a vengeance, all curled lips, snarling condemnation and derisive sneers. Their happily beleaguered audience loves them for it, eats it up and comes back for more.

Formed in response to the so-called 'Second Summer Of Love' by Duncan X and Lee Fraser, the splendidly named Sheep On Drugs set out to simultaneously mock and revel in the excesses of pop culture. Sheep on Drugs burst onto the EBM/industrial scene with “Drug Music” in 1991,
which they followed up with the sleazy club hit “Motorbike” in 1992. Subsequent releases have seen the band incorporating jungle and drum n’ bass influences into their already foreboding and compelling sound.

Their last appearance in Toronto was to a packed house in support of the legendary Test Dept. Fresh from a successful tour of Australia and Europe, Sheep on Drugs’ performance at Catalyst will be their only North American performance this year.

Now Sheep On Drugs are back with a new lineup : Lee and Kate Kuts, the only person, in Lee's words, who could replace Duncan in the band. The King Of Sleaze is Dead, Long Live The Queen Of Perversion!

Bella Morte (US)
Metropolis Records
www.bellamorte.com
www.metropolis.com

Hailing from Charlottesville, VA, Bella Morte are a high intensity trio who play traditional punk rock leavened with new wave romanticism. The raw energy of punk combines with the grandiose gestures of goth, all held together by flawlessly tight hooks and harmonies. Formed in 1996, Bella Morte has garnered a strong following in both the punk and goth scenes.

They made their Canadian debut at the highly successful Convergence 8 festival in Montreal in 2003, and LD50 is thrilled to be bringing them back to our shores for Catalyst.

Goteki (UK)
Wasp Factory Records
www.wasp-factory.com
www.goteki.com

When Gary Numan asked “Are Friends Electric?”, he must have been dreaming of Goteki.

Stepping straight out an Atari meets anime universe, Goteki are futuristic visions in neon and chrome. Following up their impressive EP, Fight the Saucerman, with their first full-length album, Goteki O/S, both released on Wasp Factory Records, this space-age trio creates spine-rattling electro with a throbbing heart and soul driving the synthesized drone, underlaid with an unmistakable new wave sweetness.

Together with their labelmates Deathboy, Goteki’s performance at Catalyst will be their North American debut.

Sylvania (Canada)
www.sylvaniamusic.com

When people talk about an 80’s revival, it’s usually not in flattering terms, but this four piece band from Toronto recall the best elements of that decadent decade. Combining unabashed glam stylings with sweet synthesized rhythms, Sylvania recall the hey day of Bowie, Iggy Pop and Duran Duran, all while creating a sound that is simultaneously nostalgic and fresh.

Having already garnered a sizeable local following, Sylvania’s presence at Catalyst will add the perfect glam-rock touch to our punk-infused Saturday night line-up.

Deathboy (UK)
Wasp Factory Records
www.deathboy.co.uk
www.wasp-factory.com

The UK’s answer to Nine Inch Nails? The UK scratches its head, and can’t quite remember asking the question, but Deathboy delivered regardless. Deathboy was brought to life in 1996 as the solo project of Scott Deathboy. After 6 years of going it alone, he created Deathboy as a full-fledged band in 2002 and partnered with Wasp Factory Records, who have just released Deathboy’s first commercial album, Music To Crash Cars To. Sullen moody music with an appreciation for the majesty of a heavy bassline and the power of a strong beat, Deathboy are a force to be reckoned with.

Together with their labelmates Goteki, Deathboy will be making their North American debut at Catalyst.

Mara’s Torment (Canada)
http://www.corpusnet.com/torment
http://www.mp3.com/marastorment

Rik Maclean has been recording and performing under the name of mara's torment for six years now and has released a bunch of discs and played a ton of shows. His music has been described as "the perfect soundtrack for those late night sessions of introspection", "strangely private", and "a very intricate and poignant examination of human emotion". It's also apparently very good for getting down for some lovin', but he's never tried that himself. Honest.

Having played shows at Convergence 8 in Montreal, at Fetish Cares and Darkrave in Toronto, and as a guest of Faith and The Muse on the Toronto stop of their Blackout AD tour, Rik is totally thrilled to be a part of Catalyst.

!Bang Elektronika (Canada)
Bombshelter

On the eighth day, God created the synthesizer, and music has never been the same since.

Toronto synth-pop veterans !Bang Elektronika emerged in 1988. Frontman Andreas Gregor is a longtime veteran of Digital Poodle, who, along with DHI, Parade, Thrive and An April March, just to name a few, created a musical scene in Toronto that was rich in diversity and talent.

Combining classical synth melodies with subtly insistent beats and the intertwining vocals of Andreas and Monique Albert (formerly of Voice Industrie), !Bang Elektronika harnesses new wave nostalgia and updates it for the new millennium.

Rides Again (Canada)
www.ridesagainmusic.com

Rides Again is a melodic, 3-piece, punk rock sensation with a tight aggressive style. They will tear up pretty much any stage you give them.

Formed in 1999, this energetic trio performed at the most recent North by Northeast Festival in Toronto, where they caught the eye of the musical gurus at LD50 Entertainment Inc.

Keeping true to their goal of supporting talented newcomers, LD50 is very happy to be giving Rides Again a spot on the Catalyst main stage.

DJs:

Ian Guthrie (Canada)
www.fukhouse.ca

A long term Toronto-based techno promoter, Ian Guthrie was part of the seminal Transcendance organization that held large and now-legendary eventsin the early nineties, bringing in renowned artists like Autechre and Ritchie Hawtin. In the wake of this early success, Ian Guthrie has made his name with his Fukhouse organization, holding events at Industry nightclub and System Soundbar, and has honed his craft as a tech-house DJ, headlining many techno and tech-house events, including Building Blocks and The Harvest Festival.

Eric Downer (Canada)
www.fukhouse.ca

Another staple of the Toronto techno scene, Eric Downer has DJ’d at Fukhouse, OM Summer Solstice Festival, and Harvest Festival, just to name a few. His musical influences encompass everything from disco, which he proudly defends, to the aural chaos of Coil and Swans. His DJ sets are similarly varied and unpredictable, fitting perfectly with the chaotic nature of Catalyst.

Lee Chaos (UK)
Wasp Factory Records
www.wasp-factory.com

A legend in his own time, Lee Chaos is not only the frontman for the The Chaos Engine and founder of Wasp Factory Records, he also likes to terrorize people with his record collection in his spare time. As Exitboy, he entices people to Exit Club in Cheltenham, UK, on regular basis, despite the fact that the club seems to keep moving around. First it was on a boat, then in a tiki bar. What’s next? Exit Club on another continent? Come Labour Day weekend, follow the frantic industro/aggro beats rocking the pavement beneath your feet to find out if a touch of UK chaos has landed in your backyard.

Len9 (Canada)
www.mortmain.com

This particular DJ wears two hats, veering between swampy, bluesy monster rock and strict electronica. For his set at Catalyst, Len9 will be wearing his rivethead hat, spinning an electric set to complement the futuristic sounds of the live performers.
