The blackout really didn't have that much of an impact on us. I had just gotten home when the lights went out.
the_axel takes a route that is regularily serviced by bus anyway, so there was no interruption to him getting home.
We were lucky enough to have a couple of big bags of ice in the freezer, so it stayed cold until the juice came back and we didn't end up having to toss anything. We took the beer out of the fridge, stuck it in a cooler and wandered down to
caspervonb and
electrolyte's place. We sat with friends on the their porch, eating sandwiches and drinking beer and taking a flashlight inside to pee. Then we wandered down to the lakeshore in the bright moonlight.
We were one of the later neighbourhoods to get power, so while I was able to do some of the work I needed to by phone, most of my files were stuck in a useless harddrive. So instead while the daylight lasted we unpacked boxes and organized shelves, getting hot and covered in dust. We heard that power was working nearby, so we elected to have dinner out at a nearby roadhouse.
Our water heater is gas, so I could even have a warm shower before going work.
It turned out to be a nice break. One I needed.
Now back to working my ass off.

Date: 2003-08-18 09:21 am (UTC)They had a couple of days of no donations, so they are worried about the supply, which is always low in the summer anyway. And supplies that were coming in from other provinces got screwed up because the bus companies and airlines were all confused.
For me personally, it meant a quiet weekend. Anything non-emergency was cancelled. (One stabbing in Midland, but other than that, a couple of quiet nights.)
