want some cheese to go with that whine?
Oct. 2nd, 2003 02:56 amThe weather is wonderful here right now, the air as cold and sharp as a sword blade. It feels like all the pollution and angst should be freezing and dropping in little clumps onto the sidewalk.
I love this time of year.
Unfortunately, since we don't have any walls at the moment, this leads to some urgency in getting our renovations done asap.
Oops.
Must have been cold last night. I found one of our sleeping bags tucked into the bed when I crawled into it this morning.
Which leads me too...
Fuck I'm tired.
Yesterday I did tons of work in the office, made dinner, cleaned up the kitchen, went to work, went to city hall to check out requirements for a building permit, bought groceries and then went home. By that time I had been up for 23 consecutive hours, and I was utterly destroyed. I ended up sleeping the entire day away.
This is why I hate midnight shifts. These insanely long days end up happening not because I'm working a festival, or studying for an exam, or fucked off my head on speed or locked out of a carpark in Harlow. But just as a part of my regular work day.
I'm against that.
I remember when I first took the job, thinking "Oh, I can do midnight shifts. I've done them before."
Well, yeah, I can and I have. I just forgot how much it sucks.
I need to get the hell out of here anyway -- it's a joe job. When I sarted working here I remember thinking that I would probably last about two years before it would start to drive me nuts. That two years is up in about another six weeks. I am decidedly ahead of schedule.
I took it because I was unemployed and desperate. I stayed because the shifts are staggered so I can get things done during the day with people in offices, and I can get time off whenever I want. So it's ideal for somebody who is trying to start a small company. But the pay is shit and the work is tedious and I Fucking Hate Midnight Shifts.
sigh
Well, if nothing else, it's more incentive to get that Evil Overlord thing working for me.

Not helping with the homesickness. In Canada, this is my favourite time of year. Over here, it's just bloody depressing. And not in a good way.
Not an international expression?
Date: 2003-10-02 07:36 am (UTC)I'm painfully familiar with the concept.

Because it just might be a good idea.
Or something.

Date: 2003-10-02 11:34 am (UTC)"Joe job" seems to be an older expression, I remember my dad using it. It makes me think of a "Joe Dirt" kind of character, not very bright, but good enough at repetative chores that don't require any independent thought.
