the hole in the hill
Dec. 16th, 2003 07:24 pmI have a new roof!
Well, at this point in time, half a roof.
the_axel and I both took some time off of work this week to go to Saturnalia. Since the event has been postponed, we decided that instead we would hang around town and do some work on the house.
It's been a pretty low-key week. Mostly we are trying to get all the dangerous stuff out of the way, and throw out some of the construction detritus in preparation for New Year's.[1] Although my involvement in the dust-sweeping is minimal at the moment, since I found out that the top of the dust-mask I wear rests right across the part of my nose where the break is. I mean, it's mostly healed, but still. Ow.
We're also doing a ton of temporary winterizing since it's become pretty freaking obvious that we aren't going to get a contractor to agree to step foot in here before spring.
Last night we broke early and went to one of the local clubs. They were playing the first two LotR movies - the extended DVD versions, with all the badger scenes fully restored. We got there at 8pm, we were done at 3:30 in the morning. Holy crap, that's a lot of Middle Earth.
First thing this morning we were awoken by the sound of things being thrown off our roof. All day men in work boots have been wandering up and down ladders and waving at us as we staple the plastic sheeting to the windows.
Supposedly they will be back tomorrow, and then I will no longer have to mop up the puddles of water off the second floor every time it rains.
One more step closer to civilization.
[1] For New Year's Eve, we are all going to see The Gaunts, aka
the_fury,
the_axel and
len9 play at Clinton's, then come over to our house to drink beer until the sun comes up. We plan to turn on the furnace for the occasion. Anybody who is local or who wants to be local for the night is invited.
