the_siobhan: (What would John Cusack Do?)
I usually set my alarm a little later on Sundays because nobody else is at work so I can take my time on tasks. It's still the most productive day of my week just because I'm never interrupted.

Lord Brock starts shouting before my alarm goes off because he wants his breakfast. Then he stands outside the bathroom door and shouts at me while I pee and wash my face because I'm taking too long. He stands at the top of the stairs and continues to shout while I throw my medications down my neck and put on pants.

Once in the kitchen I turn on the coffee while he shouts at me that I'm taking too long. I make his breakfast. If I'm lucky I make it all the way back into the kitchen before he starts shouting that his water is stale, where is his fresh water, dammit?

If I'm fast I can get my coffee into the cup before he's done eating. If I have to unload the dishwasher like I did today he's already upstairs by the time I'm finished and shouting down the stairs for me to hurry up.

Once I'm seated in my office chair I start powering up computers and monitors. He sits at my feet and shouts at me and tugs on my pant leg with a single claw. Finally I pick him up and plop him on my lap. He immediately starts purring at the top of his lungs and shoving his head under my hands.

It's a tough life. Send help.

Yesterday was supposed to be visit parent day, but his wife had some respiratory symptoms, so we put it off. Hopefully next week.

So as well as noodling around[1] with housework and bills and such, I spent my day off doing research. Which basically means watching old Peter Davidson[2] Dr Who clips on YouTube because I want to re-use one of his villains. Then I wrote 300ish words.

[1] See what I did there?
[2] I initially wrote that as David Peterson, and it took me the longest time of staring at it before I figured out why it looked wrong.

People who read my posts have probably seen me complain that ex-housemate took care of things I asked them to get rid of by hiding them in the basement. I haven't been able to clear out the entire basement due to the work going on but I was able to pull some stacks of milkcrates out from behind the furnace and empty them out/relocate them.

Yesterday I bagged up all the old beer cans, threw in the left over ones from family dinner in January and trotted them all back to the beer store. Then I took the money and went across the street to the park where the farmer's market happens every Thursday and got myself some loaves of a lovely fresh sourdough. That will go nicely with the rest of the chili.

Then because I am weak for fresh bread I cut myself a couple of slices, poured myself (possibly too many) glasses of wine and wrote 200+ words on the fic.

To the shock of exactly 0 people, the contractor was not done on Tuesday. I can hear them still thumping and sawing away in the basement.

Who knows what's going on down there at this point.

My usual practice is to do most of my cooking on the weekends. I'll throw together a meal that makes lots of left-overs and then graze on that for the following week. Bonus points if I can put some in the freezer so I can mix it up a bit. Last weekend I made a bean chili and that was dinner last night. Turned out pretty good if I do say so myself.

Trying to decide what I'll experiment on this weekend. Maybe something with noodles.

Another 100ish words last night while listening to bands recommended by Bandcamp. Speaking of which, Bandcamp is donating all their proceeds from Friday's sales to Musicares's fire relief initiative. I have a few items in my shopping cart ready for tomorrow.

I used to have a policy that no matter what else happened I would find time in the day to spend 20 minutes on the stationary bike. I would do additional stuff if I could, but that 20 minutes was the non-negotiable minimum. And I did pretty good! I kept that up for 4 solid years and then with the executor work and re-mortgage stress it went down to a couple of times a week and from there to... nothing.

So now I'm trying to make it a daily practice again.

So that's what I did yesterday after work. And tax receipts are starting to show up in the mail, so an evening of pushing paper around. Then about 100 words on the fic while listening to Maerchen1313's CanCon stream.

Only an alibi sentence yesterday as Monday nights are watch-movies-with-the-girlfriend nights. We are working our way through the Star Trek movies as I haven't seen most of them, and last night was The Undiscovered Country. Much better than The Final Frontier from last week.

I think Lord Brock might have gone a bit deaf. (Honestly, mostly because he no longer seems to be able to hear me shake the treat bag.) I've noticed that he only seems to know that I'm home when I turn on the hall light. I experimented last night by leaving the hall light on while I was out and I was actually able to take my coat and boots off and unload my knapsack and get myself a tea brewing before he realized I was home. I knew the exact moment he figured it out because I could hear him start yelling from the upper floor and then he yelled all the way down the stairs and into the kitchen to find me.

He is hilarious.

Sundays are work days for me. I'm always busy in January because I'm doing the HR audits for the previous calendar year and this year they added all the agents from our department who are on unpaid leave. Which makes sense, but they didn't warn me ahead of time so it's a lot of work to get caught up.

Feh.

Also accomplished 3-hour podcasting session, short workout, and 200 words! (Dinner was pizza, but I figured I'd earned it by that point.)

the_siobhan: (What Would James Caan Do?)
Saturday is chores day. Yesterday I did laundry, got caught up on some of the piles of dishes left over from the week (because I couldn't run the dishwasher with frozen pipes), made an appointment to get an energy audit done on the house and started sorting out the piles of paper I've been shoving into a folder labelled "taxes".

And then I wrote a couple of paragraphs while a cat sat on my lap and did his best to keep me from using my hands for anything that wasn't petting his ears.

I expect today to be more of the same.

Welcome to Write Every Day, February edition.

I tend to do my writing at end of day, so I'm usually adding my updates for the day prior. However you do it is fine, but please post your comment to the most recent entry and add the date so it's easier for my date-adverse brain to keep organized.

Feel free to talk about your goals for this month! I am actually writing fanfic for the first time in my life. I wrote a couple of pages as a piece of character development for an RPG I'm playing and the thing took over my brain and now I'm writing the whole story. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

the_siobhan: (shock and awe)
What Is Write Every Day?
Exactly what it sounds like. Every month a different person plays host to a community who encourage each other to write on a daily basis.

[personal profile] zwei_hexen keeps a list of past and future hosts here. There is a need for hosts for some of the upcoming months, so feel free to sign up if you are interested in hosting.

My job as a host is to post an entry every day, keep a tally of who is participating, and in general be encouraging and supportive. I will tag every post Write Every Day so those posts are easy to skip for people who are not participating.

Who can participate?
All are welcome to comment on any check-in post to say that you wrote that day. Or didn't, maybe you wanted to write and life got in the way and you want to talk about that. Victories, challenges, process, blocks - all are good topics to raise. If you'd like to cheer on or commiserate with someone else, please do - conversation is encouraged.

What kind of writing?
Whatever you like. If you want it to count, it counts.

How much do I need to write?
Any amount counts. The traditional minimum unit is an "alibi sentence" - a single sentence that lets you check in and say you've written today. But you don't have to write new words, either: research, editing, transcription, outlining, and other activities that get you closer to a finished draft all count.

How often do I have to check in?
Drop in or out at any time, or check in for several days at once, if you like. Please respond to the most recent post and say what day(s) you're checking in for, so I can keep the tally straight.

What does the tally look like?
For each day, I list the people who checked in that day, and I publish the tally-to-date in every check-in post. (Please keep an eye on whether I got you down correctly!) You can use the running tally to recreate your performance for the month, but it's not going to be readily visible that one person wrote most days and another wrote only a few.

Welcome aboard!
the_siobhan: (book skeleton)
Summary Post! Please do check and make sure I didn't leave you off for any days that you checked in.

And I will see you all over at [personal profile] zwei_hexen for the remainder of the month.

the_siobhan: (shock and awe)
Apologies for the late post today, I stayed up a little later than I should have last night and had maybe um, one too many beers. I have no regrets.

Starting tomorrow July 16, Write Every Day check-in posts will be moving to [personal profile] zwei_hexen. See the intro post here  to see how it will work. I'll post my summary of July 1-15 in a day or two to catch late check-ins.

I wasn't home all day yesterday, so only a single lonely alibi sentence. But I made good my promise to throw a sketchpad into my bag and did some basic sketching on the bus. And look what I found!

I had the vague idea that I had some of my old art supplies in one of the boxes in my bedroom so I went digging and found this. It's old, the box itself is from an old antigen kit that snagged when I worked in a lab in the 90s. I don't even remember where I got half of the stuff in it, but I'm delighted to find out it's full of charcoals, I used to love playing with charcoal.

More transcribing and editing last night. And then I spent some time on youtube finding drawing tutorials to noodle around with. I have some notebooks that are small enough to carry around with me to scribble in when I'm just sitting on the bus, I just need to find something I can carry a couple of pencils so I won't break them. (Although I guess I can just use pens since it's just for practice. Are pencil cases still a thing?)

The contractor is back today and there is shitty daytime radio blasting from my basement. I tell you, I have never been so happy to hear Nickelback in my whole life.

I'm at the office today, so a quick check-in post and I'll get caught up later.
the_siobhan: (What Would John Constantine Do?)
I sat on the porch last night again and did some noodling. I thought of an angle that will improve the story about 1000%, but will also probably double the length of it. Then I got down two pages on long-hand on the new section.

People who write fanfic (which I'm sure is almost everybody here) do you post your stories a chapter at a time while they're still in progress? Every change I make means I have to go back and tweak the stuff that's already written, so I'm fascinated by the skill of people who can just plow forward and still make it work.

Yesterday was ridiculous. It took me 3 HOURS to travel the 10 k to the Old Man's residence - including getting dumped out of the streetcar about 3k away. There were supposed to be shuttle buses but I gave up waiting after enough people had gathered to fill two buses and just walked for the last 30 minutes. If I don't have the promised buns of steel after this week, I will most certainly have callouses of concrete.

A long day and only a paragraph added to my story at the end of it.
