Hey, I'm serious. It's always been my contention that a healthy adult is one who, as a child, made a certain number of trips to the emergency room.
You want to have been hurt enough to know that you CAN be hurt, but that you can survive it. Too few times, too little pain, and pain and damage is too scary, because you're not familiar with it.
Too much, of course, is just as bad if not worse. But there exists an amount of pain and damage in the middle which is right for a childhood.
I think you are right to a degree. Kids need to get into trouble, but in principal I think that explosives are not the best way. Appropriate exposure to sex, drugs and Rock and Roll are a right of passage. I had friends who were into blowing things up, but I personally was not.
It all comes down to what is considered taboo and how important it is that we all challenge our boundaries. That's what differentiates the paranoid Boston PD higher-ups from clearer-thinking people. I have little sympathy for people who are unwilling to think outside of the box. This is why, even though explosives are "in principal" not the best way to loose your taboo cherry, it gets the job done.
It's been rather odd here in Boston. On one hand, the police had no problem at all with the Zombie March here, and even set up crosswalks for it. On the other hand, they totally flip out over Mooninite lite brites. On one hand, we're the only state in the US to allow gay marraige. On the other hand, we elected a Republican Mormon as governor - though we did run him outta town and elected a black Democrat to take his place.
Something to keep in mind is that the citizens of Boston had been seeing the Mooninites around town for a few weeks prior to the recent freakout, and they paid no mind to them. So, it's not like the _people_ of this city completely lost their shit. It was the Boston police - and then subsequently Boston mayor Tom Menino and MA governor Deval Patrick - who blew this way out of proportion.
