That pole that was holding up the entire house? Not holding up anything any more.

Our floors don't feel like a trampoline any more. But you can definitely see the adjustment in the rest of the house.

Here...

And here...

And this one is right over our (temporary) bed.

Good luck with all that. I am totally inspired by your grand adventure. My great crises are mostly cosmetic.

yikes. I was watching some show on HGTV where the jacked up someone's crumbling foundation which in turn fucked up half the roof. I'm afraid to see what jacking up my ceiling in the coal room has done to the front porch.

How did the walls not crack on the way down?

I can only assume it's because it happened slowly.

None of our doors fit any more either.

That sucks. Still it sucks less than the house falling down. Are the cracks a structural integrity issue, or just a pain in the ass?

That looks like plaster, so mostly just cosmetic. PITA to fix, yes, but cosmetic.

Fortunately we plan to rip down the walls around the living & dining rooms to open up the ground floor, and replace the drywall in the kitchen (to add insulation) so fortunately not much to worry about there.

I guess that's one advantage to totally renovatinga house.

Strictly cosmetic. It's all coming down anyway, so it's no big deal - but it does look really impressive.

So they're not the walls that had been already redone? Phew!

Oh no. We won't even get started on the walls until the supports are on all three floors.

As the owner of a nearly 100-year-old house, I wince in empathy, and remember how very hard I held my breath when my local handyman jacked up the post supporting the corner of my front porch roof to replace a dry-rotted board underneath it. Nothing broke, but still ...

Old houses. Always an adventure.

That is some crazy stuff right there.

I really hope I get to visit someday and hear all the stories. "And THIS is the beam that didn't exist when we bought the house, which is actually holding everything up!!"

Good luck with all of that! J is concerned about cracks in the rendering in the extension of our house. But they are tiny compared to yours.
Glad to see the improvements are happening. :)

Ah, the memories of living in the house my parents spent 15 years rebuilding. Beams in the basement, tarps for roofs, rooms with no floors, ladders for steps, kitchen in the dining room, sorry kids; no shower this week, ad nauseum.

Great learning experience, though. :)

I take it you are removing most of your plaster walls? Tearing out plaster and lathe is fun, but, oy the dust it creates!

Oh yeah - we've already stripped all the plaster on the top floor and about half the walls on the main floor. Otherwise I'm sure there would have been many more pictures.

I have dreams of taking down the wall between my kitchen and dining room and squaring off the kitchen and, and, and.

I think [livejournal.com profile] frogmaster would redefine "conniption." He doesn't deal well with projects.

But that house is going to be just wonderful when it's all done and I look forward to seeing it in the flesh again soon!
