I was going to say something similar. You might have a case with the Australians on your friends list (though their fix is mighty recent), and anyone from a non-English-speaking country or, of course, South Africa. Other than that, we're all--all too literally--in the same boat, or worse ones.
no, you know, that doesn't cut it. just because the bush regime is worse doesn't mean the harper government has nothing to apologize for -- harper LIKES bush, he would love nothing better than to be his buddy, and he chafes at the bit because he can't make canada more like the US. the main thing that does make this government better de facto is that it's a minority government and so it can't get away with some of the outrageous things it would do to change canada otherwise.
i hope canadians remember that come election time. i am worried that a relatively toothless conservative minority government has led people to believe that harper and his ilk are harmless.
they're not.
and when it comes to global warming issues, canada sucks. even under the liberals it sucked.
Point taken, but my comment was to the notion that an individual Canadian who clearly doesn't support Harper should feel a need to apologize. Although, come to think of it, I've done my share of apologizing to non-USAians for our past several regimes...
(I'm having a hard time thinking of a "first world" nation that *doesn't* suck on global warming issues. A worse example of an "I've got mine, the hell with the rest of you" issue would be hard to find.)
This always gets me to thinking about how much of an impact the leader of the US has on the rest of the world. The greed and sheer hypocrisy of so many governments has forced us to compete in the same league when no one else really feels the need to. We're so much more like the U.S. than anyone else and although we brag about our own Canadian identity, most of our governments whether they admit it or not, have tried to cater more to the U.S. than reason. I suppose it's completely bias of me because I see their politics about nothing but capitalist gain and perhaps strictly by geographic location we've been forced to agree in part. I love Canada but no matter who our government has been, they've always leaned more to capitalist ideals than to a socialist point of view. As a past and future business owner, I'm big on people creating and selling products we need, not being forced into needing a product because capitalism reigns supreme and forces reasonable alternatives out of the marketplace via the laws to support the big campaign contribution spenders, the special interest and lobby groups.
Wow, this has nothing to do with what you said. Yeah... sorry about that! I guess my point was that every government we have had has leant a hand to the U.S. plan to rule the free market. It's like supporting the bully at school so you don't get your ass kicked. That's not to say that some aren't more excited than others about working with the bully.
Welcome to the rest of North America, where we've had to say this for at bare minimum, the past 8 years in America, and a bit less than that in Mexico I believe.
