Wow. That will end badly, if anyone takes it seriously. If the Lakota are a tax-free nation, I expect the US cutting off all economic aid and "re-nationalising" infrastructure in the five states they claim will end that pretty damn quickly.
Without subsidies, power, roads, a health service, they'll get nowhere. And, worse case, the US troops have several years of counter-insurgency field history.
(I was shocked to learn they only live, on average, to 44 years. They're doing it wrong).
Comments on cavalorn's post about the Lakota announcement suggest that the Lakota government have not actually agreed to it and they're claiming a lot more land than the Lakota actually are traditional owners of. Means has enough of a reputation as a troublemaker that I'd heard of him. It could certainly end in violence.
