So if anybody on my local F-list is thinking about an Autoshare membership, they have a referral special going on right now that knocks $100 off of a new membership.
I think it may have actually started in the US. Toronto is a great place to do it, because if you live in the downtown core, you really don't need a car every day.
I found a site (http://www.carsharing.net/where.html) that lists carsharing in different cities -- looks like there is one in Detroit (http://www.via-car.com/howitworks.asp)
Lovely idea, but the sequential automatic gearbox is nasty; it drops the revs during the shifts, losing what little power the asthmatic little 3 cylinder has built up (the turbo of course spooling down between changes) and jerks about nastily. I'm told the Roadster (I think the US is getting a Dodge-branded version of it) is better, but I'd still rather have a stick shift or CVT.
i test drove the smart a couple of years back and it was **awful**. i actually cried afterwards, because i'd loved it so much, and was *so* disappointed. i totally lost interest in having a new car after that (which is probably lucky). the gearbox was unimaginably awful, and it felt severely unbalanced... more so than you'd expect from looking at it, even. it looked so clever, and the convertible top was so cool, and it was so nice to sit in, but oh, how horrible it was to drive.
It's so tempting - today I was wondering how much money I could get for it to put towards signing up for AutoShare (as I walked past one of the cars at the Yonge & Sheppard location).
