For the few of you who don't read [livejournal.com profile] bcholmes or [livejournal.com profile] the_axel, I had PRK done on Monday.

I am now healed enough to read email if I squint really hard.

Yesterday the doctor pronounced that the epithelial tissue had regrown to cover the entire surface of my eyeballs and he took off the protective lenses. The surface of my eyes is still really pebbly though, and so yesterday everything looked like I was seeing the world through frosted glass. Today it's more like really really dirty glass.

My eyes also have different focal points - a strategy they use to compensate for the loss of near vision that's been creeping up on me. I find myself tilting my head from side to side to try and find the correct eye whenever I focus on something. I feel like [livejournal.com profile] the_macross's cockatoo.

So far it's already eleventy billion times better than my eyesight was. I keep waking up in the morning and thinking, "Oh shit. I forgot to take my lenses out last night," because I can actually see that there is an alarm clock next to my bed.

I love living in the future.

Apparently we have the technology, and we can rebuild her.... it's just a pity they didn't go with the night vision option.

i had no idea your vision was that bad. am glad you have new eyes!

I'll be interested to read about how it goes over time - I've been curious about getting new eyes myself, but i'm going to wait as long as possible.

My eyes were so bad I have trouble explaining to people how bad they were. If I had been born 50 years earlier I would have been using a white cane by the time I was 18.

I'll let you know how it goes. Lasik is pretty common here, but I only know one other person who had PRK and her surgery was only a couple of weeks earlier.

I've always been too squeamish to have that done, although I have considered it. (That and the expense - down here it costs a pretty penny.) My sister had it done, though, and she started out with vision about like mine (20:800 or 20:1000 or -8 depending on what scale you're using) and she now has something like 20:30 vision. She said she wanted to be able to go swimming with her children and actually see them.

So I'm still considering it. When I'm rich, perhaps....
I hope yours heals fast.

I dropped about six months pay. I could have got it a lot cheaper, but I am really leary of using the chop-shops who make their profit through volume.

You are much much braver than I am.

This is excellent news indeed.

Here's hoping the future gets yet more desirable.

You've also prompted me to search for info on presbyopia online.

Hopefully the healing continues at the same rate or better.
You're a lot braver then I am. I've always been squeamish about my eyes...I don't think I could handle any kind of surgery on them.

I'm glad that you are recovering well. I saw axel's post about eye surgery but he didn't say what kind, or that it was elective, so I was actually quite worried about you and why you were in surgery. This is a relief!

Oh no, it was completely consensual!

Sorry for the worry.
